My Opinion of the Little Ladies Day Event

So a lot of people are trying very hard to turn things around so that it looks like those of us who have the gall to ask for equal treatment for male characters are somehow in the wrong, using all sorts of amazing logical leaps and fallacious attempts to apply real-world politics to the game world.

Stop that.

Anyone arguing that male characters getting fewer or less attractive options in the game, or that female characters getting more or more attractive options is somehow beneficial to female players or detrimental to male players are either not thinking the matter through thoroughly or are being deliberately disingenuous about it. Character gender does not equal player gender, and sexy or cute gear for female characters is 100% intended for the enjoyment and benefit of male players; any benefit to female players is incidental. Having more quality options for male characters would benefit female players by providing them with the same level of eyecandy male players enjoy in the game already; it would also benefit those male players who play as male characters, of course, but that's a good thing, too. Everyone wins, no one loses.

Whether you're going by the raw numbers of how many overall items male versus female characters are capable of equipping, or considering the actual quality of design for the male models versus female models of gear, female characters are going to win by a wide margin every time. You wouldn't even really need to look at every piece of gear in the game; the wide variety of skirts and shorts and long pants of all shapes and sizes female characters get, compared to Samey Slacks Model #4983 male characters get stuck with every time tells the story clear as day.

They're doing lightstick emotes this year because people on the Japanese forums were upset we didn't have any to go with the idols outside of some kind of old rare jp event confetti I don't know the details of. The main point of lightsticks in idol concerts is for the (typically male) fans to coordinate synchronized cheers to go with their favorite idol's performance which shows their devotion and makes the whole event more lively. I'm not really sure what the issue is but it's probably bait anyways.

While I like the Songbirds, I do also admit it's a bit jarring how most of the LLD in recent years are revolving around them. I realize they're likely popular (and thus the pop idol culture coming into play), but I miss the first couple of years I played where it was about the cherry blossoms or dolls. By no means get rid of the Songbirds, but it'd be nice if some of the more traditional stuff was focused on every other year while they play backburner.

I have a feeling I'll think that the event itself would have made more sense as part of the make it rain event and have the songbirds more linked to the gold saucer.

I don't think we need to assume anything about the developers' intentions or what kind of characters the players find attractive (if they do so at all). The reason we need better and more male character glamours is not because it would benefit female players. Female players aren't special and their existence shouldn't be the reason to implement something in game. It's enough to argue that the players playing male characters are treated unequally and that's not right regardless of who they are in real life.

I agree with you about keeping real world politics out of the game.

As for the event, it's a Japanese thing. Even if someone doesn't understand the point, they can still enjoy the rewards which were good last time and are also good this time. I can't wait to buy a handful of those shelves and use them in unintended ways when decorating.

I dont really see this as politics. I only see a small group on the web or irl making a problem over EVERY SINGLE THING.

Are we still complaining about this? How is this any different when it comes to a Western game? A JP game will always have JP influences in mind as a Western game will have Western influences.

Little Ladies day might not be as cheaply recycled as New Years but they're putting in some effort for Valentines Day, Starlight, Halloween, the Summer Events... why not for those two aswell?

Most of them have also always the same event NPCs, if your complain is about recycled event NPCs.

Honestly, their seasonal/holiday events can be hit or miss. Sometimes it's a home run. Other times it's strike 1, 2 and 3.
