Storytime!
When I lived near Hollywood I would frequent a certain famous animation house with a mouse mascot's ice cream store. They sold LE pins of their various characters if you bought a certain sundae. When they previewed something that I knew would be profitable, I would go multiple times with friends/family and buy them the sundae, ensuring that I would have multiples of LE designs I could hawk on ebay/fb - some to make a quick buck and some to sit on to sell once their “set” was complete.
Smart? I'd say so! It was pretty low effort and earned me a pretty penny. Greedy? I see no point in denying it. I was hoarding things that had a finite supply near exclusively for profit, and I cared about $ more then I cared about others having a thing they wanted.
I don't understand why you can't imagine the possibility of being both. I know I was :3

1) I think it's very clear that SE is fallible, and is only belatedly recognising the many flaws in their previous policies for releasing and selling housing plots. So, I won't be surprised if they it hasn't yet crossed their minds to offer a buyback amnesty. In any case, it seems to me that you'll support the idea. Yes or no?
2) I would strongly suggest that you, too, look at the big picture. The crux of the issue is that of scarcity. It is true that in the past, certain servers were less populated, and had less demand for housing, so some players were able to own multiple plots. But the situation has changed in those servers, so it's really in the spirit of fairness that others are appealing to such multi-plot owners to give up their extra plots.
In such a context, it would be highly unfair for them to give up property for no compensation, hence my suggestion for a full refund, if not more. I'm not advocating for mass evictions.
Fairness. A word that should be deleted from the dictionary. More evil has been committed under the guise of 'fairness', than not.
This reminds me of the 10th commandment.
You shall not covet your neighbor's house, wife, or property.

me and my friends found out recently that if someone relocates from a plot people cannot straight out buy it but you can relocate to it, we where moving fc mats near each other in a ward, though a fc near us did not exactly like this (they where tryin to buy all the plots in the ward)
This is from the new timer to thrwart the offgame resale market for plots, as it makes flipping nearly impossible. The relocation is a separated system from purchasing, but since it doesn't remove houses from the overall total, it's really not that big of a deal.
The only people burnt were the ones who wanted to get a larger house and couldn't.
They Can and they Should...
Just because it wouldn't be a popular move amoung the people that abused the intent of the system. IT would make many other players happy.
In FFXI. There was no Limit on Crafts.. they found out a hand full of peopel ruled 80% of all things sold because they add all crafts maxed out. So they changed the system.. and Forced people to choice what to spend crafting points on post 60...
For a long time it was max at 80 leveling points post 60 crafting.
In FFXIV... ALL that has to be done. is people that currently own more then 1 house. The next house they go into becomes theres and the rest of the items goto the salvager.
DONE propblem solved. This is a Private game Owned by a company you don't have any rights to anything inside the game. They can change it at there will. To say they can't because the rules where not in place doesn't mean anything. SE Makes the Rules and can change them anytime they want effecting old or future content.
Commendations.
If I play dps I only give it out to other dps.
If I play tank I only give it out to healers.
If I play healer I only give it out to tank.
Only if they should be getting a commendation.
There are always exceptions to the rules!
You can't fix a broken system by adding more rules or taking houses away from players. No matter how many rules you tack on, people will find ways of exploiting the system. Taking away houses won't actually fix anything either as very few desired houses will open up.
The root issue seems to be the lack of fairness when it comes to houses and players. The specifics of fairness changes according to which players you talk to, but in general it comes from lack of access. The best way to fix the housing issue is to make it so players have no desire to abuse it. Do this by giving players better options.
Garden Plots
Problem: Small houses are only given one garden plot, mediums are given two, and large is given 3. Why does this restriction exist?
Fix: Make it so all house sizes can use 3 garden plots. A small house has enough room so let them use it.
Workshops.
Workshops can produce a lot of gil and resources not obtained anywhere else in the game. So why restrict it to FCs and only FCs with a house?
Fix: Make workshops accessible to all players. Most players are blocked from building anything in the workshop and the majority probably don't even know how airships and subs work. It's part of the game and everyone should be able to access it.
Fix: Place workshops in a players Grand Company room and add fuel tanks to the grand company list of items to buy with GC seals. This eliminates the requirement to own a house to access workshops and any desire for players to own multiple FCs and houses just to have multiple workshops. Place a high Grand Company rank to use workshops, now you eliminated all of the level 1 alts who are leaders of FC owned houses that only exist for workshops. Unless a player is willing to level up multiple alts, these workshop farms are now eliminated from the game.
Limited Housing
Fix: Create instanced housing as a supplement to housing wards . Allow players to buy any size house they want with multiple vistas choices. It will be an instanced location so there is no need to load a whole ward of 30 houses each time a person logs into the house. There is no more need to fight over large houses or houses in the right plot. Just pick your size and the vista of your instanced house.
If you want to fix multi-plot owners, take away any need to own multiple plots.

It’s about the precedent more than anything else. If SE shows a willingness to punish players who at the time broke no game rules by retroactively stripping housing from them then it establishes the fact that in the event of further changes this would also be the case.
So how many of the people calling for this would even want to buy a house knowing that 3 months from now SE could say “only FCs can own a house, personals can be apartments” and rip that house from you? In fact given how important people in these threads suggest housing is to them... I imagine such a hanging threat would involve some lost subs too.
You might not like it but the way it has been done thus far is the best way it could have been done given the circumstances, because it creates a sense of security among players knowing SE won’t just take away things on a whim.
