I do like self skillchain of FFXI's BLU however, it was fun.
Any BLU worth his salt in FFXI would know how to manage MP. >.> Could be because I was Taru, but I never had any problems with MP.

Anyway, I've always seen Blue Mage as the Mage version of Thief. Thief and Blue Mage are my two favorite jobs, so I would love to see the two combined in XIV. It'd be tough though, because I don't want them to be 1 job/class by themselves, but I can't imagine either of them being a class...

So I think we could have a Rogue-type class implemented, using daggers, which eventually can equip job stones for either THF or BLU using, say, PUG or THM as the sub-class requirement. But then, I've really fallen in love with the notion of BLU using a gunblade... And it generally uses scimitars (guns once, trident/fork once)... IDK, I'll let the devs figure that one out.

Anyway, as far as learning spells goes... I say you unlock slots to equip spells as you level up, and have to be a certain level o learn certain spells. The first time you learn it, it should take some time (ie: not guaranteed to learn on first try), but if you remove it from your action list (by learning a different spell and choosing to replace the first one) you should be able to relearn it instantly by seeing it again. Or maybe they could implement a spell tutor that allows you to relearn old spells. That's probably the better choice, since it means BLU can't have access to all abilities at once, but doesn't have to go through a ton of work to get them back.

Or, you know, they could just implement 15 learnable spells. That would kinda suck, but it's possible.

EDIT: I just realized that 15 spells only applies if BLU is the class, not the job... Making it work with just 5 job abilities would be tougher...

all sounds very straight forward and easy but there is one snag, what about combos?

If this kind of blu were to be put in the game with the current jobs we would have 5 ability slots. 5 slots to find what ever skills float our boat. The first spells would probably be like a tutorial on learning, where they send you to learn a specific spell, but after that, spells would be at your own discretion. Many physical and even magical blue magicks can easily have a combo put in with them, especially one on different magic that are made for the class of blu you play as.

I think it should be like OP said you gain spell slots up to lvl 50(15 Slots), so that means you have 15 spells to use on bar and like 30 spells to choose from.... but honestly who would want any of the moves the FF XIV mobs have lol, mabey the 2.0 mobs will more moves that are interesting.

BLU could also keep the very action slot cost system that's gonna be nixed soon. Abilities could go straight to the action bar and be rearranged while giving all BLU spells an action cost (from 1 to, let's say, 10) to keep things fair and balanced while giving BLU's the freedom to mix and match w/e they choose.

Also, giving nearly every spell the ability to combo off of the other spells can open up strategic options that other classes/jobs wouldn't have. Of course it may be a while before we see BLU in ff14, but I look forward to seeing it in action ^^

As far as combos each applicable spell could combo with a base BLU WS instead of comboing off spells themselves. Also, it would make some sense for them to be a combination of Beastmaster and some type of Sword-using class. As FF11 went on BLU shifted from being a DD to a versatile job that could perform quite admirably in a variety of functions depending on your gear and spell set. I'd like to see that type of playstyle make a return but I'm not sure how viable it would be seeing as how Jobs are meant to specialize instead of allow versatility. Maybe BLU could branch from a base class involving monster skills.

I really hope they don't make BLU a pet class. >.> I understand the logic, but BLU is supposed to learn to fight like a monster, not with a monster.

I like BLU. I have a Almace BLU up to Lv90 in FFXI. However I don't see any good or useful abilities to learn from monsters at the moment.

and wtf blue pet class? who said that!?? /facepalm

edit: PLD is tank, they don't do anything else. They should excel in it in my opinion.

I'm not by any means familiar with movesets of mobs outside of marmots, funguars, and yarzons, but I'm sure there are plenty of good ones. It's not like every spell in FFXI was terribly exciting. Foot Kick? Uppercut? Pretty standard attacks, but they had their uses.
