Depression is something everyone faces at some point, and whether long term or short term it affects us all.

I do appreciate the attention it has been getting since the show, and its a step in the right direction.

I will say without gaming, I'm not sure where I'd be. I've never been suicidal but days can get extremely dark and oppressive.

One of the major obstacles I'm currently struggling with is making a phone call to inquire about an application.
A simple call and I just can't do it. Every time I try I just grind to a complete halt.
The situation almost sounds comical if it wasn't driving me up the walls but it is what it is.

Wow...I know exactly how you feel. I feel like a complete idiot sometimes cos of that. Its just a dumb phone call.
Is it me just being lazy and looking for excuses or is it really something else that keeps me in check?
At least I can say its never been THIS bad before. Ofc I'm not happy to see others struggling with this but I can't deny
that it does help to know I'm not alone with these "silly" problems...

To tie the discussion into the game, I wish people would be more respectful of others when choosing their words online. Life is hard enough without people being mean in our videogames which may be our only escape or distraction from real life struggles. Majority of players are nice but it only takes a few bad eggs to ruin the fun.

It's not uncommon to see people being harassed about mechanics flubs or low dps for poor reasons like "it's fair game to call you out for sucking". People aren't perfect, they are allowed to make mistakes. Taking your frustration out on people won't improve the situation.

I'd like the rude people to think about how differently they talk to somebody they care about like their parents for example. Everyone on the internet deserves to be talked to with that same level of decency for they are real people with feelings too.

My sincere condolences for your loss.

Your post is a much need reminder that we never really know the burdens behind the faces we walk by each and every day. I have personally been to some dark places both figuratively and literally. As someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts myself i know that many of us are just one bad day from doing something cannot be taken back. It may seem like simple lip service but i feel it's something far to easily forgotten.

Be kind to others.

There is so much ugly in the world, so much wrong and heart breaking, that the promise of tomorrow is easy to be obscured by the burdens of today. A kind word, a helping hand, a small gesture, something given in genuine understanding that we as a people are fallible and flawed but capable of change can truly save a life. Sometime all that's need is a bit time out of ones day to tell someone struggling that they are not alone.

We all of us here play this game of fantasy. Some for the lore, others for the challenge, still others for the simple beauty of the setting, but we all of us have Final Fantasy in common. We can build on that to become friends, to reach to those among us that may need someone to talk and confide in. A friend for when the world has beaten us down a little to well. These interactions can be taken outside of the game, be used on those we see in the real world who may just need that same genuine kindness to get trough the day.

I...wasn’t expecting someone to bring back this post. Brings up a myriad of emotions to sit and look through it again, and to see more condolences from people who took the time to read such an old post.

Though it is old, and though 9 months have passed since my friend took his own life, there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about him, especially since I started back to school. And I still stand by the things that I said in the OP—that people should remember how, to someone somewhere, they are the most important thing in the world; and how people should try to remember that the person they are talking to on the other side of their computer screen is a person, so try to treat them with some semblance of respect.

Amen. Not everyone understands that. sometimes people just want to make friends and feel like they are connected to people.

I know this post must have been hard for you to make, OP. Talking about this sort of thing is never easy, and sometimes, even someone who still pulled through their own pain, can't find the words to talk through another's suffering.

I'm thankful no one's taken that last step in my life yet, but it worries me all the same whenever I hear someone thinking about it in one form or another.
