Repairs (and sometimes loot) have been in place to encourage players to return to a central hub, take a break, not dominant a single spot all day.

Gear damage penalty on death is one of three consequences of death (weakness and loss of time for lack of success).

I think the repair process could be a little smoother. At the NPC, having a quick repair all option that takes no more than five seconds. I imagine this will be addressed as infrastructure is adjusted.

Why even try to salvage it? As a death penalty it's too abstract and as such not doing it's job dying is still almost meaningless. Invent a better one or use the previous XP loss that actually worked. Add gameplay to it or get rid of it. The way it is makes it nothing more than a ui mess.

    I have been at work...

I created an account here because it is an important issue to me and FFXIVcore.com is almost dead, been posting over there.

    Nice assumption tho.

Is anyone really afraid to die because their gear will get lightly damaged, thus requiring to pay few pennies to a NPC ?

I'm not for the return of xp loss, but there must be another solution to bring back the sense of danger while exploring and fighting epic battles (which is a big factor in people's FFXI nostalgia shown in those "journey" and "one zone" threads).

I'm sorry. Perhaps I wasn't clear by saying "IN COMBAT". Or I guess it wasn't obvious that gear damage was accumulated by recieving damage. Because, you know. Its not like almost every other MMORPG shares the same system.

Thank you for reminding me why both your opinions and this thread are equally awful.

I find repairs pointless, and more of a hassle. In no way does this balance anything and I am 100% for getting rid of the repairs in exchange for a death penalty.

Rather it just be the npc repairs your gear to 100% and then crafter can boost it more depending on specified crafter level to 125%,150% or more. Really don't see any point into the current repair type system even on other mmo's imo.

I think the repair system is a good idea but I agree that NPC should be able to repair the items to 100%

It is so annoying that I can't go and sell the gear I no longer need until I find someone who can repair it to full...

You want gil sink ? here I give you 1:

exp lost when death and then place a NPC in city/town that player can pay gil to get the exp lost back

there you go, gil sink system and please remove the repair, it is annoying

I belong to the other end, repair system not punishing enough.
    1) Items should break and lost if they are allowed to hit 0%.
    2) Items should look bad if they go yellow or red - we need some of those badly dented armor and fraying robes.
    3) Any attacks strong enough to kill you in 1 hit should set a randomly selected piece of armor to 1%.
