actually that not why repairs are in place, repairs were here before that death penalty even existed.Repair is in place because there needs to be some consequence to dieing/being in battle.
A couple of minutes in a weakened state isn't punishment enough for being reckless in battle.
The current system is very affordable compared to other games.
Repair NPC is your friend. Especially since NPC's can repair accessories in next patch.
You'd expect this sort of "I dont like Repair" "Airship cost is too much!!!111!" thread from someone who didn't have a LVL 50.
But this? Shame on you.

Get rid of player repair and make NPC to 100% for all items. That or make just one item called Dark Matter and let the appropriate crafter class repair all items using it.
A gil sink (or any currency sink) purpose is to get rid of money in the economy to stabilize an overabundance of what's coming in, it's not doing it's job because there's also NPC repairing.
Let's put it this way, unless you're adamantly trying to meld 4 materia to gear and you're buying top materia constantly, the rich is still rich and will continue to get richer, this means the gil sink isn't doing it's job, because we can counter repair costs after just 1 leve, let alone selling spoils from leveling. A gil sink should be able to take out more gil than what comes in.
please remove repairs, XP, mobs and crafting
and please OP remove yourself
its needed for a death penalty. The biggest problem I have is not being able to trade gear if its not 100%. What if i want to give my new friend starting out my old gear, well I have to bazaar it and wait for a stranger to repair it, then I can trade it. I hate that so much. Don't allow it to be posted in AH fine, but allow it to be traded between characters for the love of god.
--i feel better getting that off my chest.
no it shouldn't, i gil sink is just a means of taking gil outta the game. you can have multiple gil sinks in a game, hence the airships.A gil sink (or any currency sink) purpose is to get rid of money in the economy to stabilize an overabundance of what's coming in, it's not doing it's job because there's also NPC repairing.

edit:if i went to a repir npc to get all my gear fixed it would cost around 35K plus gls that theyre adding 60-70k
so 3 airship passes and a set of gear fixed is 60k

leave repairs alone.
also, not all players have millions of gill.
i have about 1.2mil and its taken time and effort to get that as i dont craft. only leves i do is gathering and gathering rarely makes enough income until it hits L50 and you got yourself kitted out in top gear/materia. then and typicaly only then does gathering make us money atm.
even then, we have to keep a close eye on the erm...(brain just died, cant think of the word)..............economy! there we go, we have to keep an eye on the economy because almost everyone undercuts instead of finding the average selling amount and selling for that amout (which is what i do to try and keep a stable economy).
there has not always been a gear damage penalty for dying, sorry
gear damage penalty for dying was added in 1.17-1.18 sometime, i forget exactly.

You skipped over a part of his sentence -- "A penalty for being in combat or dieing." Repair systems are in MMOs for the purpose of keeping players engaged in character management. It was added as a death penalty (all MMOs have one) because people would be upset for losing miniscule exp that's made up in minutes.
