So does Warrior do anything in it now?

Way back when, that was what I tried to get into, and one of the very first things to grab me in FFXIV was that it set up WAR the way it was seemingly supposed to have been in FFXI -- and succeeded.

See, if the sub-job system had been at all what it was cracked up to be, my ingenious combination of WAR/DRG would have been viable and my view of Vana'diel would've been voluntarily obscured behind cutting-edge PS2-era dust cloud particle effects and miscellaneous vibrations.

Warrior is a very solid DD and has been for years. Get a Ragnarok, cap out Resolution, spam it and win the game.

To expand a little, if I remember right, WAR/DRG did work for a time, at least. I had a LSmate that did it and destroyed things. Guy dropped a huge 2k Steel Cyclone on a mob in Limbus with a 2k Light SC. He died shortly after, but man was he strong, heh. It involved the Barone Cosciales, because they gave you bonus TP on jumps, just SAM kept getting buffed and buffed and buffed again. Eventually SAM became the better sub job because they got things like Sekkanoki, Hasso and Meditate. Zanshin was a nice bonus, as was all that Store TP. These days most WARs sub SAM if they want to go ham on things just to produce big numbers, afaik. DRKs do to.

Just as a little side note, I don't think WAR was really meant to be an end game tank in the first place. It had the tools it needed to perform the role, and it did well in the tank role until about mid-30s or so, but it's also mid-30s where your subjob used to cap, at 37. WAR got all it's tanking tools below 37, which really suggests that WAR was meant to be subbed by the actual end game tanks. PLD was designed to be THE tank, and WAR was designed to be the thing PLD used as a sub.

I just want to add my love of FINAL FANTASY XI to this thread. Don't get me wrong, I love it in Eorzea, but I really miss Vana'diel, even with all its hardships and ridiculous gear collecting for maxing out what you can do on even just one job. The community was much more tightly knit, the game provided every possible reason to actually care about Vana'diel and its inhabitants, and the ending of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel had me literally crying for days.

This was at the time you had to have ninja subbed (if not your main) in order to tank anything, anywhere, because even if you did find a healer, healers hated healing. Attempting to play ninja, with the monetary upkeep it's exploitable blink spell required, remains to this day, in my opinion, the most unbelievably un-fun activity a video game has ever expected of a player.

It's possible it got better since then. Probable, even.
I think part of the reason some people found it so hard to find parties is because they were so closed minded about set ups and things. look through the lfp list oh no ninjas or paladins can't make a party then. and thus wait for hours.

yet some of the best and fastest exp parties I had were using other jobs to tank. monk/war at 55+ could tank incredibly well with counterstance and many players considered it to be a lol job because it did lolbluntdamage. I even tanked sky gods on monk. laughing at byakkos triple attacks when they all got countered..

Sam was the same. seigan third eye was in many cases even better than utsusemi. especially when things like pecking flurry would strip all your shadows but only count as 1 attack for a sam to blink away...

I think many players would /sea all inv. see like whm cor thf mnk drk drg. and be like damit can't make a party with those jobs... but you could make an incredibly solid one..

it's kinda like how in xiv people have such closed minded party finders. sorry no sams darks or blackmages allowed.... and then complain it takes to long for there party to fill.

in xi monk was my first 30 job and the one I cleared all 3 prommys with. 2 friends (thf and whm) and I were in prommys farming those recollection things that you used on the bosses. then went to help get one of them some leaping boot for there thief, and after that another ls member took us to the glacier and got me some boreas cesti from an nm there. and then pretty much smashed all 3 of the prommys the following afternoon, pld whm thf mnk rng and a smn. still friends with them today

All jobs though.. can do anything, outside of group stuff. Group stuff is still, flavor of the month jobs.

Ah duo wielding was fun with relic and mythic weapons. Specially on PLD , NIN , and THF

That's definitely what started it, but dual wield axes are no longer a big thing. 2H weapons had a period where they vastly outclassed 1H weapons, so WAR made another transition from 1H axes to 2H axes, and stayed that way until Resolution happened, afaik, which is a 2H sword skill. WARs with an Ukonvasara(Empyrean Great Axe) still used their 2H axes though, because while Resolution is indeed a really strong attack, Ukko's Fury with Ukonvasara equipped is mighty. Not better then a Ragnarok Resolution combo, but still strong. 1H weapons have made a pretty strong comeback recently, so other jobs have made a comeback. Heh, there was one point in time where a THF could do more damage with Rudra's Storm if setup perfectly then a SAM could put out with a Tachi: Shoha. That got Rudra's Storm nerfed though

FFXI is indeed still better in terms of depth of the lore and world.. I mean WOTG is really where the game shines too... exploring the same world.. but in the past.

The BIG zones, that you had to adventure through etc.

What XIV needs.. is maybe some of the XI cities to revisit... since Shantotto has already come through... would be nice to follow her on a mission.

Uh...the AH gear at that level was the hardest stuff to get. I mean, it would be like being able to buy 330 gear right now. You often had to do other things just to get decent gear in the first place. Like I could never afford an eurytos bow, so I camped the mob for the selene bow, which was less but closer, and that took a long time. You could go into endgame yes, but you would have to grind lower tiers like sky and do salvage, and then you'd advance up into sea. Its just there was a LOT of lower tier endgame, which was very nice. Like if you didnt want to do sky, you did salvage or einjerhar.

and um, dude no offense but if you played with someone who had insane gear, it was really different. People went insane about the ridill and the kraken club because they increased dps by insane levels; the gear progression was nowhere near as flat as here. If you had one monk at mid level aith AH gear and one with O kotes, you saw the difference.
