Bringing up SMN again, not because of how much it impacts the MSQ, but because of how much it doesn't when you'd think it really would. Not so much how it would impact the MSQ plot, but impact the WoL's relationships especially with the Scions. Like, the Lvl 58 SMN quest is literally about how the WoL infuses themself with Bahamut's power. And somehow they've got some technique that looks an awful lot like Bahamut himself. Oh and their LB3 is Teraflare, aka, what caused that 7th Umbral Calamity and killed Louisoix. I can't be the only one thinking that Alphiaud and Aliase would not be okay with anyone messing with Bahamut's power or someone giving the impression that it's okay to do that.

As for other how other people think of the WoL... I don't want to know what Garlemald thinks of a SMN WoL knowing what their stance on Primals is. At the very least, Zenos taking over Shinryu has a very different feeling when it's the WoL who started messing with Primals first. And how do most people know that that's not what the WoL are doing anyway?

The Lvl. 60 quest that introduces Prin is also hilarious. Like... the WoL just goes and does what an Allagan relic wants them to so they can get an ultimate summoning technique? You'd think between Ultima, Crystal Tower, Dalamud, Azys La, Omega, etc. that we'd know better then to do what Allagan relics tell us to by now... but no, we really do want that technique that lets us summon a mini-Bahamut. On the other hand, maybe that's one of the points of the SMN Job Quests. The Allagans pursued information without thinking about what they were really doing and the WoL is doing that more and more as the Job develops. At the very least I usually think of Summoners as the game's token good mad scientist.

Ah, that's great when later details in the game line up with your own ideas!

Part of my elaborated-version is that my WoL, Aurelie, has friends with her - it's not a proper RPG without a party! - and one is a ex-lancer who'd given that up after the events of that storyline (which are not given enough emotional focus IMO) and turned to archery instead - and I'd come up with that backstory before starting on the bard quests, which are perfect for him. I think he and Jehantel ended up working through their traumas together.

(For that matter, Aurelie may be coping better than the generic WoL because she's got friends for support. They're having conversations in my head, if not as the cutscenes play out, then certainly straight afterwards.)

I haven't gotten to any of that yet... should I be finishing the Binding Coil of Bahamut first? (If I can get some people to do it unsynched with me to just get through the story...)

That actually is better explained if you happen to be playing a character that was originally created in FFXIV 1.0. During the 50-60 SMN quests (specifically, the one where you sneak into Carteneau), if you are playing a 1.0 character Y'mhitra specifically mentions you as being present at the Battle of Carteneau and thus as a Meteor-survivor instructs you to draw on your memories of that terrible day, having seen Bahamut "in the flesh" so to speak, you use your own memories and the lingering aetheric residue of Bahamut in the area to evoke a slither of his power.

This line is different if you are a new player who started the game in ARR though when doing that quest (I confirmed this with a friend of mine who only begun their FFXIV journey in ARR and they had a totally different line when they did that quest, although I am unsure as to what was specifically stated).

So yeah, that's a situation where having a 1.0 character actually added more context to the quest.
