Just played Final Fantasy XI

.. Did you ever try to get the rings from that stupid jelly, archers ring I think? Or the kraken club? People were helpful as long as there wasn't an item at stake. I won't say the game wasn't wonderful, but I remember quite a different community.

XI did require people to work together for a majority of content, but there was competitive content as well. Although that stuff has mostly been snuffed out now with the changes. It definitely added some..flavor..back in the day. lol ><

But then look at the XIV community on the forums, and in DF/game. We have our own drama to contend with here.

I wish I could play it. The control scheme is horrendous. I can’t stand the camera control (keyboard. I couldn’t get a controller to work)

If you've not played before, I think you really, REALLY have to want to play the game, because the first week (or three) is going to be pure hell while you get used to the UI, macros, controls..everything. If you survive that, I think you're set

I still consider ffxi the best and funnest mmo ever played. If they ever re mastered it with better graphics I would most likely go back to it. Had so much pve content to it.

Yes, FFXI is still a far better game. Too bad any reflection on that will get crucified here.

I'd say instead that it's a different game. The slower pace and higher levels of difficulty (and tedium), the relative lack of guidance, all of it combined to create a much more immersive experience, if you stuck with it. Hence the nostalgia, the memories, all that good stuff.

As far as whether it's better or not, that depends on the player. I share your stance, but I don't think it's an objective thing.

I think this is an important thing to remember. It is an incredibly different game, and of course everyone has their own particular taste when it comes to games. It is also possible to enjoy both, and also find faults in both :X

You can call it rose-tinted glasses if you want you can even call it installed you the fact is Final Fantasy XI will always hold a place with me even today I still play it you know I have throughout the years been on and off. The real life friendships that I've made with the players that game ones that have become true close friends will always be remembered in some I'll always be grateful for.

Yes the graphics are dated yes the UI is different than the quick press interface we now have. But for me personally that doesn't matter world if any deal feels alive airships can be seen leaving in and out of Juneau even in areas outside of you know you can see them flying in both come in and out of docks and ports NPC's walk around it just feels alive. You have that feeling of exploration finding stuff so many things can be done within the game you can do a lot of stuff and think wow there's nothing to do but if you look around you'll find that thing even if it's minor to do.

And for those who may have said or dislike the D leveling part it's so different now that unless you're at the beginning levels it's now choice if you want to D level or not and even if you do D level or lose experience points it's so easy getting them back and very quick to and leveling actually is quite quick now with all the stuff that has been added to the game.

I played 11, 14 of course I played wow as the MMO's I even played briefly those web-based MMO's. I just personally for me like oh that atmosphere of Final Fantasy XI really keeps it as a Final Fantasy game you have the different jobs you have all these spells and abilities and it really makes it for me at least Final Fantasy.
