Too bad it takes 2 hours or more just to get an account to sign in. PlayOnline can cause cancer to have cancer.
I remember when we first started to hear news about 14’s production, that they were entertaining the idea of somehow merging 11 and 14 together through a portal in the Mog house. I think the insinuation was, that your character could bounce between 11 and 14 through portal or something like that. I quit playing 11 after I beat the final expansion, which was freaking awesome. But I’d probably still keep a subscription to it if they would’ve had that Mog house portal option.

It’s being made by Nexon. Yes, that Nexon, the one that makes Maple Story.I saw once that it was supposed to be ported on mobile with new graphics. Didn't saw any new news about it for a while though

My feelings on XI? <3

The recent rehash of the XI XIV collaboration event hit me pretty hard. The nostalgia was unreal. XI was my first mmo, and I invested five years into it that created a lot of memories. That last year though, was just me leaving and coming back over and over again looking for something that was no longer there. It was sad indeed when I just knew that my time with the game was over.
Coming into XIV, I knew if I continued to look for that first-time-playing-an-mmo experience, my sub wouldn't last long here either. I had to accept that those days are well behind me.
XI is a dinosaur compared to today's standards. I have no desire to play a game with the engine it uses. I don't enjoy not being able to kill a rabbit the same level as me. I hate my explorations coming to straight halt if I get aggroed. I'm not going to state that XI is a better game than XIV due to merits of nostalgia. I don't work that way. But XI is without question a beautiful game filled with great story, music, characters, areas, villains, and most of all, players. Many players back then we're first time mmo'ers and it created an environment that can no longer be found today.
XI has been psychologically buried for me. May it rest in piece. It is XIV's time now.

Although I love FFXI and still do and have lots of happy memories from the 13 years I've been subbed to it (including meeting my boyfriend there!), I cannot put on rose-tinted glasses when it comes to talking about it, as there was just so many problems with the game I struggled with for so long that I could never ignore or accept as 'just how the game is' now.
Things like the awful EXP loss penalty on death that would even level you backwards if you were unlucky to die while being too close to the previous level still EXP wise (you lost 10% of the total exp needed for the next level when you died, raising gave some of that lost exp back), enemies being ridiculously dangerous even for minor trash mob wildlife like rabbits and yet giving minuscule EXP for it, having to party for everything and even then certain content pretty much restricting party make up to certain Jobs, airships running on tight schedules that all too often would result in players missing one by the skin of their teeth and then having to waste 10+ minutes of real time sitting doing nothing on the dock waiting for the next one, people abusing NIN as a subjob for Utsusemi thinking it made them invincible and then not accepting that it didn't (and thus leaving WHMs like me to have to raise them for their stupidity), no minimap, quest journal that was virtually useless and told you nothing about what you needed to do for a quest (thus forcing you to look online for the (often misleading, incomplete or inaccurate) information, important quests (even main scenario ones) that were locked behind invisible 'fame' counters for each city that forced you to do thousands of pointless fetch quests just to 'build up fame', need I go on?
And I still remember that one occasion as a level 30ish WHM in Rabao wasting an entire night (8+hours) with my party flag up waiting for a party invite that never came! (And that was as a supposedly 'needed' Job!)
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to bash FFXI here but I am under no illusions about the bad aspects of the game that made it often something of a chore to play, and thus I could never play a game like FFXI again. FFXIV despite it's minor issues is still the better game to me as it improved on FFXI and dispensed with those outdated concepts. I love FFXI still regardless, but I realized long ago I love FFXIV more. That's just how I feel.
Having said that, there was still plenty I loved about FFXI: Windurst was gorgeous as a city, WHM will forever be my favourite job (I especially took much satisfaction spending time in 'newbie zones' like Sarutabaruta healing new players I came across), the sense of exploration and achievement was real, and when you got a party that all... just... worked, it was just so much fun. And, as I mentioned, I met my boyfriend there, so that alone makes the negatives disappear.

I pumped a *lot* of time into FFXI (I ran a highly successful gaming net cafe at the time #excuses).
A few things that stand out vs FFXIV:
The art direction and attention to detail within the world was completely unrivalled. It had so many little flourishes and details that on the surface of things, were completely pointless yet mesmerisingly beautiful. It really did feel like a living breathing world in places with things surprising you even after you'd played it for years.
A more coherent musical score with some hauntingly memorable themes in there. Whilst FFXIV trumps it for battle music, FFXI's open world was full of songs that I can still instantly identify and visualise to this day. Gustaberg, Sanctuary of Zi'tah, Heaven's Tower, Tavnazia to name but a few. Even relatively 'mundane' tracks such as the Promyvions were perfectly crafted for their purpose and matched the eerie and absolutely unique atmosphere within.
The community, warts and all. There were times when I literally wanted to grab some players and deck them in the face, there were other times when I loved them like family. The sandbox was much smaller and as such, everyone was accountable for their actions and behaviour. But at the same time the content actively encouraged an often rather hostile tribal mentality within the player base. Whilst it often caused some horrible divisions between rival linkshells, it also made the bonds within that much tighter. On a side note, it sure did wonders for making me rather thick skinned as well
I could go on and on!![]()

XI has its positive and negatives just like everything else. I think I can sum up my opinion as such 'I loved the game to death when I played it but I would never play a game like it again'. The reality is FFXI belonged to a specific time and place for me. I just would lack the time or patience anymore for the type of demand XI tended to make of you back in the early-middle of its life.

I still play occasionally because it feels like an actual mmo to me, but I gotten so use to modern graphics and faster combat it hard to ignore. Know if they improve that aspect I mention which is a pipe dream I would be playing it allot more often then ffxiv! /Shrugs
I think there are quite a few things that XIV could take inspiration from in regards to XI where the open world is concerned. Even WoW, as casual as it can be at times, has taken steps to ensure certain parts of the game world are tough to navigate and effectively require a group to explore properly.
Perhaps Eureka will help scratch that itch?
