There's only 1 reason: Whales.

Plain, simple and to the point. SE believes - rightfully so, probably - that any copies of their product not purchased by really cheesed off people will be happily gobbled up by a select few individuals. A good number of people that are annoyed will still buy the CD, the artbook and future products to boot. Plenty of people arguing in bad faith on Reddit, lots of people coming to Yoshi and the dev team's defense in general... but this decision is unlikely to have anything to do with them. This decision would have been made way above Yoshi's pay grade, and would therefore not have anything to do with:

It's because people ruined it for us. Not so much the minions and the orchestra roles which cannot be traded but things like the housing items. You make an alt and put a PF up saying give me 2mil and I'll put the wayward hatchling lamp in your house.

Nor the mail system. Square's shareholders and high level management don't know anything about the technical aspects of this game. They might barely be aware that it's a game and not just some magical waterhose that spews money. They only know that profits are up (more people are playing the game because of Stormblood), and that it's time to wring some more blood money out while the going's good. And if it doesn't blow up in their face? They'll wait a bit and then push harder.

Doesn't matter if anyone that bought this current batch of stuff gets fed up and abandons ship; there will be new whales to take your place by then. That's why this situation exists to begin with after all: There are constantly people joking about how many Fantasias they go through, and there are plenty of people buying the currently existing single-character MogStation items multiple times. They wouldn't be doing their jobs if they didn't see how far they can take it.

The situation described applies to just that - housing items. One could argue that you could pay someone to play it on your orchestrion in your house or whatever, but what happens when you want to change music or someone overrides, you just gotta buy again when you want it back? that would be terrible business, and one not many people would be keen on investing in. And on minions and the orchestrion roll items themselves, it doesn't affect the situation at all; they are completely non tradeable. You can't spread them out like you could with the housing items.

But on the latter part, yea, they're probably seeing how far they can push it. Hopefully we can get a response to at least clarify whats going on.

Indeed; I absolutely do not agree with what I quoted. The quote, and one of the responses to it (blanket modification of codes to prevent "exploits" like that), are what I would label as arguing in bad faith. Worse, they try to blame the community* for the issue instead of placing the blame where it lies: At SE's feet.

Even if that were the actual reason, they're just bonus items, right? Why would it matter.

* I mean technically it is our fault for buying the things we want from the Mog Station and SE Store, but that's still a really awful stance to take. Especially when the option "enjoy the profits we're getting" is valid versus "I want maximum profits" when this is a subscription game.

Actually a community rep pretty much did say that here. They were talking about the Orchestration rolls from the Symphony soundtrack, but that was before we knew it was also going to be the same single character only with the upcoming artbook and potentially everything else going forward.

This is such as customer UN-friendly move to start making the merchandise 1 per character. While I can understand the reasons for this for something like the housing items, there is no reason do this for items like minions from the art book and god forbid if they do this for mounts.
This is such as disappointing move, especially for someone like myself who has supported the game since beta and given SE so much of my money and while you shouldn't buy the merchandise for the dlc that comes with it, lessening the value of them by doing this is kind of a slap in the face and kinda disrespectful to us.

I understand that it might be impossible to do now with the music rolls the unreleased art book must surly be able to be changed still. I hope someone reads this from SE who is making these changes and can give us a honest answer for this, because outside of pure greed of getting the extremely rare few people who really want that minion to shell out 120£ for their characters

Do they not understand that such moves could destroy the relationship with the customer? This just feels like the sudden price increase for brazil and russian players and honestly how far will they go in the future? At least this just hardened my descision to not buy any merchandise again..

Its sad that a project that already brings in such a huge amount of money thanks to subs alone (and lets not forget all the cash shop money too) would need such practices on top of that..

This is extremely shady and sets a bad precedent going forward. Why change something that has held solid in practice for 4 years with all other merchandise bonuses and even promotional items? Worst of all is the sneaky changing the description after things were already listed (or bought!). SE, this is how you slowly destroy a successful game - you start doing things like this which outrage and alienate a good portion of people who still had faith in you as a company.

So the mog station milking becomes worse and worse. Rightfully though. I would do the same or even worse if I were SE. Why? It's nothing personal it's just business. When the cow is willing to get milked you just milk it to the last drop.
If you have an issue with this change stop buying things from store and be vocal about it. If you keep supporting them you will get this and even worse in the future.
