It's no different when big name review sites and such when they make up a top 10 FF lists, XI and XIV are pretty much never included. It's impossible to judge an MMO next to a single player game of the same franchise. Single player games from start to finish are set in stone and have very tight boundaries. MMO's are an ongoing project with less boundaries. Due to them being an ongoing project they can very well go from being on top one day, to a dumpster fire in a month. Yes XIV and XI are FF games, no different then SWTOR is a Star Wars game, just as TESO is an Elder Scrolls game, but due to them being MMO's, they're an MMO first and their namesake second really.

I really feel they've gone backwards in many things. The dangerous feel was there when I first started 14, no FATE nerfs, picking best routes to travel, etc. The sync down button pretty much ruin it at high levels, instead of opting in to join FATEs, we should be opting out of it (i.e synced by default encounter).

They're numerated games in the main FF series, so they're definitely FF games. They're simply not single player JRPGs.

SE numbered the online ones so they are part of the main series.

The argument here made by people who say this, is that XI and XIV should not be in the main number series but treated as their own thing or spin off.

They say the actual XI and XIV should have been offline triple A games.

    Final Fantasy 1-15

These would be called Online with own numbers.

    Final Fantasy Online(FFXI)
    Final Fantasy Online 2(XIV)

    A mobile spin-off numbered

    Final Fantasy Mobius
    Final Fantasy Mobius 2

    A VR spinoff numbered
    Final Fantasy VR
    Final Fantasy VR 2

    Handheld spin-offs

    Final Fantasy Agito 1- whatever

    or

    Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core

    or

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

    or

Final Fantasy VI: The After Years

    The full remakes
Final Fantasy VII: Remake or some other catchy sub name applied to other full remakes.

XI and XIV don't really count as main FF titles because they provide such different experiences to each player. People don't just put in 50 hours, complete the story, and have a baseline to talk about the game.

Raiders, crafters, people who casually go through the story, people who RP, PVP ... people are here for many different reasons, and there isn't that much in common.

The lack of common experience is what makes FFXIV more of a platform than a game, and puts it in a category separate from the single player games.

The thing is...each FF game is different, be it in aesthetic or gameplay.
We have turn-based, ATB, real-time combat, MMO-based etc. It doesn't matter, if they are in the mainline series then it's a part of it.

If anything, XI and XIV is "more FF" than recent games because they capture the classic aesthetic of I-VI, plus it has a Job system.

honestly I consider whats a FF game based on two things, one if its made by square enix, two it has the same type of magic ( like firaja or Blizzard) so with that in mind, I consider games like Bravely Default ( and hopefully Project Octopath Traveler) as Final fantasy games. The only FF game I don't truly consider as a FF game is Final fantasy XV but that's because of how it turned out to be story wise ( was to simple for me, heck I could go into a deep conversation on how FFXIII was the most deep final fantasy game I've played and I played them all except 11).

I thought of ignoring it but I keep thinking about it lol
Btw I don't much of the history of mmo
They are considered Final Fantasy title and the person you are talking too are closed minded thinking that only single player title are FF. Shantotto and Y'sthola appear in appear in crossover titles like Dissidia, Theaterythm, and World of Final Fantasy. Music from FFXI and FFXIV are also played in SE's Distant World concerts.

XIV and XI are part of the series and are main title FF games like it or not.
And as all FF titles it's not FF unless we argue about how FF it is or how true FF it is nor not.
All titles are considered controversial yet the series is still here 30 years later.
To me XIV is and feels more "FF" than some other main title FF games.

Its just too much a shift in genre. Going from JRPG to MMORPG and them being the only 2 in the enitre FF universe, makes sense to treat them as their own thing.
