To back this up.. I was using Rogerwilco and Battlecom back in the mid 90s. People talking out of game isn't anything new. Some of us have been using voice comms in online games for longer or nearly as long as some players have been alive. Predates the genre of FFXIV too.

I do most things through the duty finder and find new friends all the time. My ls has told me it's my superpower but the secret is just to talk and be nice to people. If you don't talk, why should anyone else?

I can attest that as a PS4 player, it is very difficult to converse in duties while fighting - I have to actually take a hand off my controller, and that's not something I am able to do, especially with the harder stuff. Aside from that, I don't exactly hang out with anyone outside of my FC. Usually when I am online, I am doing some form of duty - I am rarely not doing anything in Eorzea. In duties, I'll usually do the greetings, but if no one talks, that doesn't really bother me either. I'm also naturally introverted, so the silence is kind of my buddy.

I think it's a core phenomena with MMORPGS that, when we're all bright-eyed and new and in wonder at all the new things in the game or genre, we're FAR more willing to socialize or even seek such interactions out, and more willing to look past negativity. Yet as we play more and the game loses that magic nature of being new, most people tend to not want to socialize as much anymore. And it's just a negative feedback loop from there, as the only way people will socialize really, is if they WANT to do so in the first place.

My case-in-point: Most every MMO will have threads remembering 'the good ol' days' where the community was 'better', and these threads usually only start to pop up once a couple years or so are under it's belt for the larger games.

I feel this varies on a person to person basis. A few nights ago i held a 4+ hour conversation with someone completely random in limsa that started over glamour and ended up talking about personal likes, hobbies ect. by the end of it. I don't feel the game has gotten less anti-social, just that people nowadays lack the ability to both start and hold a conversation. Paraphrasing a quote here but, be the change you want to make. Don't expect people to just fall out of the sky to start talking to you. A modicrum of effort is required from both people. That is all.

Hmm I find the game extremely talky. This is my second day and I already have over 10 friends. Most of them I made cause they wanted to pat my head. o.o Yeah I know how that sounds, one even pulled my ear. People least on my server have been extremely talky. Heck I feel bad when I'm just laying in bed ingame and I miss a tell or a hello as there's always someone willing to talk I find. Then again I bet it's cause of my hat that I got abit of attention lately.

I'm guilty of being the anti-social socialite. Sometimes I'm really in the mood to talk to people and can no problem, other times I may not even respond to the dungeon hello. Especially if I'm on a grind fest and I'm just kind of exhausted at that point. I wish I could find more active linkshells aside from the hunt ones though. I'm in a solo guild and have been for years for personal reasons so I would like a group occasionally.

I talk in every run I do. I'm not saying that no one is social in the game, rather than it has become less social in DF, and on my server at least in hubs.
For instance, I started a new relic yesterday and of the 10 dungeon runs I did only 1 carried a conversation beyond hello. From my experience playing the game, people were simply more talkative prior.

Oh, that I always do and if there's some sort of pause in the action I'll probably try to work in some conversation. Awkward silence is awkward.

Funny that you mention the relic in this context - the original ARR-relic and specially the light-farming and dungeon-drop-grind were the point when I created my "Hello"-macro. Its really just a macro that says "Hello" in partychat because I still wanted to be so friendly to greet everyone but couldnt even bother anymore to even type that for the 15ths time in a row (and also because I was chatting in a LS will friends during all of those runs and having to switch to party-chat was always disruptive to the conversation I was already having). Out of the I-dont-know-how-many-runs-anymore I can only recall two ending up in short conversations beyond "Hello" and both were basically "Yep, I'm on 23 runs now and still havent got the drop. It sucks." (...we met that one poor soul who needed over 40 AV runs for the drop...)
What I'm trying to say is: I dont recall the game being more social or talkactive in dungeons - and I do believe this is a case of nostalgia and "Everything was better in the old days!"

(Most) People dont run dungeons to have a conversation but to run the dungeon, aka: play the game. And that wasnt much different 4 years ago, as far as I remember.
I've had nice conversation during dungeon-runs too, but that has always been rather the exception - and what you're making out to be a problem actually doesnt seem like one to me, but rather like wrong expectations or "wishful thinking".
I dont want to be rude, but I'm not in that dungeon to have a chat. I'm in that dungeon because I have buisness there - and if I want to have a chat I know where to go for that: FC, LS, friends.
