How about this suggestion then? Taken from A Tale In The Desert.

Introduce house deterioration. Let's say every week the house loses about 5% durability and requires fixing up, nothing too expensive but enough to make people need to spend a little time gathering and crafting for some repairs. To reach 0% durability would take around 140 days, which is a reasonable amount of time to gather materials together to help patch it up if it got that bad. At 0% add an extra 30 days for the land to become unstable that it either must be repaired or can be demolished and reclaimed. Tweak the numbers to how you think is best but I think that 170 days is plenty enough time to determine if someone is coming back to the game or not.

Yoshi’s only “guarantee” was that it would be “fairer” and that everyone would have “an equal chance at a house”, but not that everyone will be guaranteed a house.

    o.0

So you want to extend what was a 45 day timer encouraging active use on a finite housing supply with an almost 6 month timer + upkeep on a finite housing supply encouraging new patch only play.

    >.>

That doesn't help SE or players really.

How can there ever be a house for every person when there are new people joining the game all the time, and people buying houses with alts? I doubt SE would claim to be able to provide enough for everyone to buy one, unless they instance it.

There are still swaths of people without power in Puerto Rico from Maria...

I think they should simply just implement instanced housing and make a housing server, that would allow everyone to get a house and would provide a good reason to finally remove or at least extend the bloody demolition timer ( 30 days puts quite some pressure on you and on your money, being forced to keep resubbing and resubbing every month isn't fun , sometimes you just need a break ) .
As for neighborhoods , they could be randomized...meaning that the server is going to load your house and its garden ( for yourself and your party members ) while the other houses exteriors get generated casually or by getting picked from any other player's.

Just fyi the demo timer is 45 days..

But personal i think the house demo should be sub based, If you let your subscription drop for 30 days you lose your house. As long as you maintine your sub who cares if u go in your house your still paying for the right to have it

I was going to say something similiar, actually. Inactivity due to things beyond the player's control such as natural disasters shouldn't be enough to get your house demolished at least not with the state places like Puerto Rico are in right now.. They do have options to keep their sub up though, even if it's not auto renewing which I realize many don't have.

In turn, this will free up the housing plots from people who have already unsubbed, and have outright quit the game once the timer's up. The housing auto demos aren't perfect, and are a bandaid solution, but as was said somewhere within this thread in my skimming.. they're in far too deep with the issues of the current housing system to truly fix it without reworking it entirely.

I myself am hoping that they at least, make it 1 personal and 1 FC to account, but that is a personal pipedream, and am otherwise content just keeping an eye out for any chances at a plot for my FC until 4.2.

I think what they were getting at is that you have to stay subbed whether you want to or not to keep the house on your account whereas everything else is still there if you take a break and come back.

The problem with the timer is it is a diversion from the real problem which is insufficient housing. If SE would quit trying to band-aid the current system and build a new parallel fully instanced system the need for the timer would go away.
