That's pretty much how I operate as well. They get several chances and once they've exhausted them, that's it. As the Hive Leader said, there's a time to heal damage - and then there's a time to watch everyone BURN.I play a slightly different ruleset. I'll give you a couple of chances, then I'll give you a nudge saying "Hey, you should dodge stuff" by means of Rescue. If that fails, you shoot down the priority list of healing (if I'm feeling especially petty, I'll even go so far as to make sure my AoE heals don't hit you, yes, I did do that before). When they die and they pipe up at me saying "Why didn't you heal?" I'll chime back up with "Why didn't you avoid the AoEs?"
Oh and even better, I've had people die to one-shot mechanics then blame me the healer for not healing them through it. I tell them it's a one-shot mechanic and that I'm a healer, not an act of god. They usually shut up.

I didn’t post about these stories in this thread (just in others), but here they are for this thread. Because they are that depressing/irritating/surprising/there just are no words.
ShinEx: Joined what I thought was a “clear” party (it may have been a farm...there were so many ShinEx parties...) this past weekend with a friend; I was on BRD and they were on DRG, because BRD+DRG is life (WTB piercing debuff/Litany). Other two DPS were a MNK and a MCH. Can’t remember tanks but I think they were PLD/WAR and healers were WHM/SCH I believe. Anyways, this MCH... this MCH. He certainly had a lot to say. He picked at the MNK every time they died (which was usually to just not being topped off before AOE damage—they got marked for Earth Breath a lot, and didn’t get any sort of healer heal to offset the DoT damage), and kept making comments about how people should stop dying so that we wouldn’t see the second Tidal Wave in first phase. Well, the last pull we had, no deaths, and we still saw the second Tidal Wave. And here’s why:
Myself and my friend were doing about 5k DPS each. The MNK, who was in full 320 crafted, was holding steady at 4,000~4,200 DPS, dipping below whenever they died, but that’s to be expected. The MCH...was barely breaking 3k DPS. Tanks were about 1,500 each outside of tank stance and healers weren’t DPSing at all. The MNK died twice in one pull and still beat the MCH (who was in 330~340 gear) by 600 DPS. God I wanted to rip into that MCH, because for all his big talk, he certainly had nothing to back it up with.
V2S: Joined a “clear” group (not a learning according to the description) on SCH to get a bit more SCH practice in Savage (I have healed V2S on AST but wanted to roll SCH). First, there was a MNK doing 2.5k DPS and...idk what he was doing but let’s just say he was one of those “Tornado Kick off cooldown MNKs”—he also followed me for healer probes every time I got them... which was weird. But my co-healer... Diurnal AST. She would be down to 800 MP before the first Gravitational Manipulation. 800. MP.
Her healing rotation was something like this: 6 Aspected Benefits on the tank (there was no way she was letting them expire, so I’m guessing she used them for the regen AND the initial heal), 3 Aspected Helios (always had the HoTs ticking, even when we weren’t taking any damage), 5 Helios, 3 Benefic IIs, and 3 Benefics. I was just astounded though. It happened twice and I finally said “How are you at 800 MP 1 minute into the fight”. They said they didn’t know.
Well, I knew.... and I am sad.

To add to this, I also tend to ignore the verges as well. Same in the normal Ultima fight. I might have a different opinion when I get to lvling BLM, but generally, those are things I ignore because they're usually not worth the hassle to kill as any of the roles.

I actually tested it using the healing “rotation” I named in my initial post when I got out by aggroing a Striking Dummy and seeing how long it took me to run out of MP— while the 3 Aspected Helios were completely unnecessary during the first minute of the fight (and the 5 Helios), especially since I mitigated the first Gravitational Manipulation and Indom’d any damage that wasn’t mitigated, I honestly think it was her using Aspected Benefic that did it. A.Benefic has a regen of 18 seconds, and 6 of them within the first minute/minute-and-a-half of the fight, she must have been using them not only for the HoT, but as an instant-cast heal. That can and will eat into your MP super fast. She did pop Lucid Dreaming, but by that time she was already near 1,000 MP, so it didn’t help much.
Maybe she was just used to being in Nocturnal Sect and reapplying single-target shields to an MT, but that’s still not a very effective use of A.Benefic. It’s one reason I get onto to regen healers for not using their HoTs during a fight, because spamming A.Benefic is incredibly MP inefficient. But, yes, 800 MP. Forgot to mention her overheal was pushing 60% for each pull.

The BLM dance in Ultima when everyone is ignoring the adds is the ultimate practice for getting a cast off and moving out of a line AoE. I loved that dance when I was leveling my BLM.

Rabanastre group, playing SCH with my healing buddy Moro playing WHM. On the first boss, our tank apparently decides he's not interested in tanking, mechanics, or... anything, really. We really noticed that when we had a WHM tank on our Azure Guard. That caught everyone off guard, but we almost made it work. Thing didn't die fast enough and we wiped.
So, tried to remind the tank that he needs to pick it up. Second attempt... WHM tank. This time we just ran with it and it worked long enough for it to start pinging between a couple of people until another group finished theirs off and their tank came to help out.
Our tank didn't do any better on Hashmal, as you'd expect...
It was pretty cool that Moro can WHM tank, but mostly in a "glad that didn't happen again" kinda way.![]()

As the aforementioned WHM tank... I wear a bikini into battle, please don't make me tank adds in it!Rabanastre group, playing SCH with my healing buddy Moro playing WHM. This guy was all over the place. He was a DRK at 70 which means somehow he cleared other content on DRK and I genuinely don't know how. Tridus was on top of boss explainations after the first wipe and our tank never responded to anything. As stated the same exact issue happened again the next time Azure Guards spawned, I held ours for a bit and then it bounced between a RDM, a SAM and I enough that we could kill it. I think a NIN might have Shadewalkered me which is pretty awesome.
I haven't been a part of many kicks other than afk/offline kicks but this guy earned his for sure. We wound up with a lovely PLD who did her job from Rofocale on and my gear could not have been more thankful for her.
Also, for anyone curious, a SCH can indeed keep a WHM up through the Azure Guard phase quite well. Healer armor might not look like much but apparently it's perferable to nothing.
Okay I want to just ask this, the tanks didn't have tank stance and were pulling 1,500 each? Did they die a few times? Either way it is too bad the MCH was a butt. :/Myself and my friend were doing about 5k DPS each.
