They can, the game doesn't need a new race

The game doesnt need alot of things, but that doesnt stop SE from adding them or the players from requesting them.

As for 5.0, there will be a new race, not because SE wants to bring joy to the playerbase. New races are used to sell the expansion, with 4.0. Yoshida said that, because of the class balance and changes, the workload was too much. I predict the next new race will either be Viera or the Lupin.. I realy hope no Lupin, because the FFXIV werewolves look horrible.

My prediction: 5.0 = Viera and one of the new classes will be an orignal. Do not worry DPS players, one of the 5.0 classes will be a DPS. SE wont release a new tank and healer toghter, because of balance issues.

They look like they're just wearing Halloween masks to me. I have nothing against beastial races, but..just don't make it look like that :X

Tru. I would rather have one or all of the pre-existing ARR/HW beast tribe races than furry tall men with wolf head and tail; Especially Amalj'aa or Sahagin.

tl;dr viera aren't digitigrade, no reason to make them digitigrade now

If the concept art is anything to go by, SE intendeds them to be. It's probably the only way to make them visually different (aside from their ears, which will also need to have some hat redesigns) from Miqo'te (which Yoshi-P himself said they looked like, but taller) and Elezen.

Good point! I'm really not too familiar with any FF titles outside of XI and XIV, and hadn't realized they crossed so many titles. I mainly know Viera as Fran. Also, I love a good pear-shape! I'm down with a pear-shaped flat-footer.

I agree, viera are a perfect race to introduce a hip slider to the character creation screen.

I give benefit of the doubt to the artists that they understand anatomy and they were not trying to create a chimera monster but just sketching. Digitigrade locomotion is found mostly on the opposite end of the animal kingdom, it helps with prowling and chasing down prey. Plantigrade feet help with load bearing and self defense, and lagomorphs are the fastest plantigrade animals due to very light and fragile skeletons with powerful leg muscles.

High heels support the heel of a plantigrade foot, providing height and stability. Hypothetically a digitigrade foot/leg cannot wear heels because the heel would hang loose off the back and get in the way like strapping a chair to your thighs.

They already have many unique features that don't introduce inconsistencies.

Because they all actually look bestial. Lupin would have hit the mark far better if it didn't look like they appropriated a highlander body and slapped a wolf mask on top. Which, to be fair, the Kojin also suffer from. Once I learned they could detach their shells it just made my initially 'TMNT cosplay' thoughts run rampant. Their faces don't even more when they talk. >:

With their ears almost definitely. Not too sure about how tall they'd be without them though, even in FF12 their heights were fairly varied, I distinctly remember Fran and her sisters had at least a heads worth of height difference between them.

+1 for viera bc they have a special place in my heart (first exposure was from xii when i was younger) but if we're hypothetically talking about the possibility of viera clans, specifically viera and the RW feol, i'm mostly worried about customisation. since viera lore says the virea we're more aware of have white hair (with the exception of hair dye)/dark skin, and the feol are opposite of that, that sounds a little limiting? unless xiv implements a non-tactics/xii viera race which opens up more customisation...
