You can't compare an offline game to a mmorpg. Try comparing it to dark souls in any case. That's in a closer ball park.

The Dzemael Darkhold, Ifrit, main scenario quests ... this is what FFXIV has going at the moment.

Cutsceneless quests, leveling, crafting, leves. All this is boring.
Its boring how you have to gather all these mobs and spam mindlessly AOEs to level up.
Its boring how the npcs spew these walls of text at you for no reason whatsoever.
Its boring how mechanic and easy leves are.
And crafting is just tapping a button now.

In dark souls its not so much about your level, but about your skill. Its pretty much an extremely difficult open world dungeon crawler. Everything you do feels like an accomplishment, and it doesn't take years to level up. It takes skill and patience though. Which goes against the american mmorpg model, so SE considers it as a no go.

I would much rather pay attention fighting a single enemy than gather up 8 and spam an AOE. A single old school FFXI fight, that's what I'd like.

Instead we are left with instant gratification zerg fests and a bunch of meaningless rank 50 jobs.

He's not literally comparting the gameplay, but how much content there is to do. Currently, there is just Ifrit and Darkhold every so often. That's about it. Oh the strongholds too... but that's about it.

You do realize end-game content is not the only content there is, right? There is plenty to do, even if you aren't a completionist like me.

That's the glory of the FF class system. Yeah I have a few 50's, but by far THE MOST FUN thing to do in the game right now is bring a couple of lv. 20-ish buddies into Shposhae and go coffer key hunting.

    Broaden your horizons yo.

Dark Souls is a perfect example of skill vs lvls. You can use the dupe cheat to lvl up your character as much as you want but if you suck at the game it wont help you any. I remember beating Demons Souls 1st time and the sense of accomplishment that brought me was one of the best gaming moments in past 10 years.

    This right here.

Just because you have a level 50 doesn't meant you HAVE to take it to every single thing you do. Grab a low level and go to the Mun Tuy Cellars and just explore. Go dungeon diving for the hell of it or explore a bit of the Eorzean landscape for yourself. Kill anything that gets in your way with a level appropriate class.

Boom, you just solved boredom and EXP in one go.

In this case, it's the player's fault. Not XIV's.

Sorry, that's my fault. I was using Skyrim to exemplify a point and rather than clarify, it confused.

To summarize what I was trying to articulate: levelling should be a by-product, rather than the goal, of a game.

My point meant to show that Skyrim accomplishes that (IMO), but FFXIV falls short, and therefore doesn't meet my own definition of "fun".

"In this case, it's the player's fault. Not XIV's." That's right people it's our fault, now get that party of level 1's and grind on some rats. FUN :/

If only they were aware of what an unfinished product they have and were working on completely rehauling nearly every aspect of the current build of the game...
