It's not based on statistics (they believe they have more subscribers who main male characters; whether or not they're correct is an irrelevant point as it's just anecdotal evidence).
It's not commercially sound (they can see how much money on unnecessary extra junk I spend on this game - it's a lot, and not everyone unhappy with this treatment is even staying to pay a subscription).
It's not based on cultural factors, because there are lots of good designs from before the creativity faded away. The glorious mishmash of the 100/110 PVP sets alone counter almost every 'because Japanese culture is conservative' argument.
It's not based on history, because when ARR launched and became a success glamour options were 100% equal between male and female characters.
It's not based on time taken for development, because the bunny ears are coming up to three years overdue and anyone with even the most superficial knowledge of modelling could get those working for male characters within a couple of hours. The texture on the Edda dress alone would have taken longer, and served far fewer customers.
It's not because SB 'happened' to have more female characters they could use, because they still chose to lock the outfits. I'm happy there are so many female NPCs. But there's no rational justification for locking hotpants and a jacket.
It's not about authenticity to the character from which the outfit is borrowed. Aymeric's hair proves that.
It's not based on what other MMOs do, because the Final Fantasy series has long enjoyed a remarkably balanced appeal compared to the narrow focus of other titles. You can see it at every fan event or in online fan communities, just by looking around and seeing all the happy female faces mingling with the male ones. You can see it in the outspoken LGBTQ+ community here on the forums and in-game. You can see it in the compassionate responses new players receive in the New Players forum. When I leave, I'm not going to go play another MMO. I'm just not going to play one at all, because what FFXIV had back before it became a pander-fest was special and unique.
It won't get better in future, because we have Hien, Alphinaud and Gosetsu to come while girls are looking forward to Lyse v2, Minfilia v2, Yugiri (possibly two versions since Yoshida said her SB outfit was a unique recolour), Alisaie, Yotsuyu, Krile (already confirmed to be one of the next) and goodness knows who else, plus two different medieval dresses from HW which people keep asking for. I'm happy to have lots of female NPCs, but the unique male costumes are ridiculously rare. Maybe we can get all of the Garlean armours while the female characters get none one day. Imagine the riots on the forums. It will never happen.
Even when we do get outfits, they're afterthoughts compared to the female versions. The Thavnairian silk dress is a full outfit; the shirt has no matching pants. They have a curious obsession with giving us shirts with no matching pants. I'm glad we get the shirts at all, but it's a lot harder to put unique outfits together if your character is a dude.

All of this is based on the fact that the dev team has become completely tone deaf to the fact that they are favouring the same group of people over and over and over again. It's like a textbook example of repeating the same avoidable mistake and making their own customers feel like garbage. And they'll drive their beautiful game into the ground one day without ever seeing the problem they created.

The relevant statistic would be who spends more on glamours, rather than just subscribers.

There's no doubt there are players who want more glamour for male characters. I think the relevant question is whether that's the norm, or if those players are a relatively small number.

I don't understand this argument at all. ARR launched with even glamours, and since then, they've become uneven. Doesn't that imply that Square Enix, who has hard data on exactly who glamours what, has seen that there's more demand for female glamours?

They started locking (male) outfits after people complained that the genders weren't being treated fairly. When they first started doing gendered sets, like the bridesmaid/best man's sets, they generally left the male version unisex while the female version was locked.

Given how Square Enix has acted here, I think it's safe to assume that they think female glamours are more lucrative. We can argue until we're blue in the face about why they think that, but we don't have access to any real data. Square Enix, on the other hand, do.
