what are the couple top ways to level an alt?

other than purchasing it is it still PoTD? and mixing dungeons and leves and fates and duty roulette? logs? etc etc?

Depends. For tanks and healers, queuing up for dungeons leads to faster xp. DPS tend to do better with PvP or PotD (and those also don't require gear upgrades). Also don't forget to do your job quests, and past 50 you should be doing hunt logs.

Also, may be useful to try the squadron missions at lower levels for DPS. Standard dungeons with instant queue, albeit with sometimes dumb NPCs.

You can only recruit 8 at at time. You can also only take 3 of them with you on a command mission, or send 4 of them out to do a mission on their own (this doesn't give you xp, but can get items). Generally it's best to have 2 tanks, 2 healers, and 4 DPS (with a decent variety of them) so that you can switch them around as needed for missions.

Yeah, once your team gets to 8 members people will still apply to join but if you take a new one you have to pick an old one to dismiss. Their stats are determined solely by level and class. So if you find a member you like(for looks, race, appearance, whatever) and want to keep who has a job that doesnt work for you, then its best to keep them and get one of the job change manuals so they have a job that you do like. You absolutely must bring 1 healer, 1 tank and 2 DPS(with you filling one role) when you do command missions - so its basically required to get people covering each role. Some people get a variety of classes for versatility, other people set all their team members to the classes with the polarized stats in an effort to meet squad mission requirements. There isnt a right answer.

Or just get a BRD, WHM (only healer) and any tank. BRD just barrage spams.

    Lvl 1 - 50 PoTD
Lvl 51 - 60 Roulette, Dungeons, PvP matches, Hunts
Lvl 60 - 70 Roulette, Dungeons, PvP matches

I find PoTD past lvl 50 can be damn boring, so I wouldnt recommend it.
