Because it became ridiculous by the end of FFXI that the player's character, who was also a powerful, god-slaying adventurer that was consistently saving the world, was then constantly having their thunder stolen by story npcs who would get all the credit for their exploits - basically the player's character was just some nameless fighter who found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was only with the finale to FFXI's story, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, that the player's character finally got the credit they deserved, being ascended to godhood no less (or rather, that's stated as their ultimate fate decades in the future). So all FFXIV has done is actually had the player's character be properly credited as the real hero, rather than just a sidekick that tags along for the ride with story npcs who are the real heroes like how FFXI did it (I admit, I much prefer the FFXIV way, but that's just me).

Really, there is nothing stopping you from saying your character is just a regular adventurer, as out of the main story there is nothing that specifically identifies you as the Warrior of Light. That's the whole point of roleplaying after all - you're free to make up your own story if you so wish and simply ignore the events of the main storyline. It's your choice to do so.

And that's exactly how it plays out here. The vast majority of the NPCs we assist in XIV have no idea you're the Warrior of Light (I'm not even sure most of them have even heard of the Warrior of Light); to them, you're just a random seasoned Adventurer with too much free time. They may express their gratitude for your assistance, but they don't drop to their knees and worship you for your deeds.

But besides all of that, the Warrior of Light is a simple adventurer... just one that happens to have a unique gift that helps get them into more shenanigans than most bog-standard adventurers would face. More importantly, the WoL has always seemed to view themselves as an adventurer first and foremost, regardless of what other titles or labels others try to apply to them. We lend a helping hand when asked and get into all kinds of crazy shit, because that's exactly what adventurers do, not necessarily because we fancy ourselves heroes.

With this character's death, the thread of prophecy remains intact.

Notice how pretty much every quest, from story to side, rewards gil.

In my mind, I'm only doing most of this because I'm getting paid.

And also sometimes I get to kill things.

I mean people can spin your role in this game's storyline however they want, but they are legit treating you like royalty and praising you left and right. You're practically the messiah.

Am I complaining? Not at all, just think it's kind of funny people are skirting around what's actually in the game by picking and choosing.

I don't mind being "the hero", but I admit that I did eventually get a bit tired of always being the unbeatable warrior. Which is why I really enjoyed it when Zenos just destroyed me on our first encounter.

Sounds like you need to pick up DRK in Ishguard to confront your shadow.

I don't think it would make sense if I was some normal guy, slaying gods and being noticed by all the important people cause I can slay gods. Being the WOL makes the most sense due to the story at hand. Now if it was something like Tera's story then yeah.. in that game you're just some gunt moving up on the ranks doing missions and whatnot. Who just so happens to get to the point of killing gods and saving the world. It's abit different depending on how you go about in the story. But in this game.. there's no way you'll ever be just some guy.. cause just some guy doesn't kill primals. They get rekt by said primals. We would need an entire new story for " just some guy" Or you can always RP the normal guy
