    Elidibus theories and speculation *SPOILERS*

I posted this in another thread, but I thought, we have a thread to discuss the Yotsuyu cliffhanger, so Elidibus/Garlemald need one too

I think Elidibus is the Aulus Mal Asina, the figure we see in Garlemald, and Aulus, both fit Elidibus' build, not to mention, Varis would be taken aback that the scientist that Varis valued is actually an Ascian.

I think it is more likely that Elidibus will have stolen Varis' body and used the Empire's Allagan tech to rebuild him, possibly hypertuned. If Zenos is to come back, he will have to pay a price for his 'death', bringing him back hale and healthy wouldn't feel as good narratively. Elidibus infiltrating the Empire would actually be a decent twist, and would explain the creepy turn that the Magitek has started to take since the Empire lost Nero.

Aulus, Elidibus and the figure all share the same type of clothes too.

Elidibus as Aulus was my first impression, as well. Something about the way a figure in white stepped out from the shadows behind the throne has had me suspicious of him since the middle of the Zenos story arc, though those suspicions waned a bit when he "died" in Ala Mhigo. The journal said to slay him, at the end of the fight he slumps over and fades away in a rather convincing death. But, hey, maybe it was all a ruse.

The big bag of hints that Zenos was bodysnatched was suspiciously heavy in 4.1. I've been hoping it was just full of red herrings (or that the current scenario team simply has better ideas for it than I can presently foresee, lol.)

I'd take either or both over the Gaius theory, though. That wasn't how I wanted him to make his comeback.

I believe that Elidibus is posing as Regula. I feel like that would make a lot of sense as it'd make Regula's death feel like it had a purpose - since he has yet to actually be acknowledged at all outside of the side quests that take place in Azys Lla. Plus it has been established that he was good friends with the current Emperor and has been close to him since they were children - which translates to decades of friendship given that they were both in their forties. It would also explain why Varis would feel angry/unnerved by the sight of his deceased friend...and why Elidibus suggested that the sight would bring 'comfort'.

I dunno about that. If you never do the Warring Triad quests, then Regula would never die.

Which would be a pretty awkward and contrived approach. Once an expansion is over and done with all content associated with it should be considered to be 'canon' - and if people haven't tackled it yet then maybe there should be altered text to bring people up to date. I'd rather not see interesting characters given a raw deal and forgotten about just because they're associated with side quests rather than MSQ's. I also believe that the side quests involving The Warring Triad were originally meant to be part of the MSQ's but were cut out specifically so that raiders could unlock it more quickly and efficiently. So Regula shows up a few times in the MSQ's...only to vanish and have his story concluded in side quests.

He appears to be wearing a white variation on the Imperial Othard uniform. Maybe it's a garlean emissary or some such?

I suspect that Zenos is not Varis' only heir and that the figure expressing anger/frustration is unrelated to Elidibus. We'd get our 'Larsa' - who doesn't need to be completely similar to the FFXII version - and the presence of a Garlean Consulate in Kugane makes it very likely that the Warrior of Light will interact with a representative from Garlemald if things start going south there due to Elidibus' meddling and Varis' actions. It's common for prominent families to invest in an heir and a spare so I find it unlikely that Varis would only have one.

With what we know so far it's the most likely answer, it wouldn't make sense for it to be Elidibus purely on the basis that they are clenching their fist in frustration at news of Zenos being 'alive'. We know for a fact he is dead so there can only be ascian work here.

I think, if we do get Zenos back, he needs to have suffered somehow, I think having him Hypertuned would be a great way for him to reappear, kept alive as a Magitek abomination. It seems Aulus prefered to use Magitek on people rather than machines, like Cid/Nero. His knowledge of aether, magitek and the echo is something else.
