Wyrm is ethymologically a doublet of worm. Worm can be used to mean dragon, tthough usually this dragon is wingless.
While correct, "wyrm" would never refer to a lowly earth worm and more readily connote a dragon or serpent. On the other hand "worm" is more readily associated with slimy invertebrates in your garden.
