    I fought him a month ago and he was level 50. He died in an instant.

    Sounds like he spawned so many times and failed so the difficulty kept decreasing, because the odds a level 50 killed him are abysmal. I saw him last when he was at 58 and he was in very good health. Us, not so much. And that's AFTER he respawned with the same last killer a couple of times, indicating the FATE failed before.
