I haven't finished 4.1 MSQ yet, but I want to say that this topic's title is aready a spoiler for me... (=_=;
Killing off characters that people grew attached to is already getting old. I really hope they don't do the same thing again with any character for a long, long time.
Nah..You see. This is what is going to happen.
Arenvald will be walking down the street minding his own business. Good man, got to be a boss and get stuff done! Good days work, ya'll!
Then suddenly, an Ascian appears! He calls him out all 'Yo, you're the warrior of light's friend? We need to break him/her!' and then this big Monstrosity of a Chimera appears; The kicker is it has Haurchefant's soul in it and saying random lines he was known for! You are now forced to kill him while he cries out in pain yelling 'Please! I don't wish to hurt my friend!'
When you defeat him the Chimera slowly drops to the ground before the words 'You...You are unharmed? F-Forgive me... I could not bear the thought of... of- Oh, do not look at me so. A smile better suits a hero' and then..POOF!
Just going to leave this here:

Literally every character boasts a fan following, though. Some just have some incredibly vocal fans who kick and scream at the mere suggestion of anything bad happening to their favourite characters. I like Arenvald but I'm not opposed to him being killed off so long as it is done in a way that makes sense and has a lasting impact. As it stands, very few characters have perished in the grand scheme of things and by the end of 4.0 not one but two nations are liberated from Garlemald's grasp without any major characters perishing along the way.
It's hard to consider the antagonists a threat when they're not allowed to succeed due to a troubling amount of plot armour and plot convenience on behalf of the protagonists. If they do kill him off, though, hopefully they remember he exists as the plot moves forward. It irritates me that a certain soldier perished in Azys Lla and has yet to be mentioned at all despite sacrificing his life to save someone he had not obligation to protect.
Oh, I meant characters that the majority likes. There are others more during Heavensward that sacrificed theirselves, although they aren't as liked. All of it lead to this trend of people trying to predict who dies next which has been annoying to me, personally.
Character deaths are fine if done right, but I haven't seen much in FFXIV that executed it well so I'd rather they keep them alive and give them some more time and development, same for antagonists since antagonists need their fair share, too. They're never threatening which is true.

I'd rather he stayed around, too. He's been quietly keeping Urianger company in the Waking Sands since 2.0, and it's nice that the minor Scions have been getting screen time here and there.
"8000 malms to Eorzea we've come, 'cross both a Continent and an Ocean (and we did it in one-fifth of a second)"

Death has no emotional impact if you 'didn't' grow attached to the character prior. So whenever you want to pull death as a plot device to make a threat seem actually threatening, you need to build up the character you're going to kill off in advance. And since the scions and waifus of this game are entirely off limits, they can only do that with side characters, hence people get wary when one of them suddenly gets spotlight. It often means they're trying to make you care for that character so that their death gains impact.
The only way it would be a "spoiler" is if Arenvald was either already established to be a major character or someone previously thought to have been dead, and he's neither.I haven't finished 4.1 MSQ yet, but I want to say that this topic's title is aready a spoiler for me... (=_=;
Let's not call spoilers where none exist; this isn't GameFAQs.
Of the remaining Scions, I think we need a bit of a reshuffle. Y'shtola's blind if not for sensing Aether, and Thancred can't use magic anymore (not that it seems like he did all that much before). The twins are. . . special cases, as Alphy's both diplomat and director (at times), and Ali's a fighter, but not quite as composed as the others. Urianger's largely information support. Arenvald already being a member is a logical choice for a new Scion "elite" member.
