Which probably won't happen. Nothing's impossible, but this is highly unlikely. XI still has a sub and it has been going for over a decade...and only has a couple hundred thousand subs now? Idk, that was the last I heard. But either way, if it's still got a sub, then XIV will have no issue.

They are not comparable though FFXI still has a sub because its not worth it for them to completely redesign the game to make it f2p at this point, the game is not going to attract many new players anymore so they are just letting it run until is no longer reasonable to keep the servers up.

FFXIV on the other hand is still current and already has some of the systems in place if they ever decided to go f2p and if it ever did it would probably still have a choice to pay the same sub or an option for a free but limited pay as you go model.

Honestly I have not ever seen anyone ask for the game to be f2p from people I have played with since 2.0 so I doubt we are anywhere close to 80% of population demanding it but if the amount of content continues to shrink who knows what will happen 5.0 and beyond.

We got jump potions so I wouldn't count out anything if SE thinks it will make them more money.

Any youtuber or any media outlet that simply cites YoshiP considering F2P can be ignored from now on because they are not reliable sources.

The original statement from YoshiP is that if there is overwhelming demand for it then they will consider it and change the game accordingly; i.e. just business common sense. "Sure if everyone wants it we'll consider it" kind of response. Any source that cite the last half of the statement without emphasizing the front half is sensationalist garbage and don't have any business "reporting" anything.

Look, the standard answer from him about any and just about every question ever posed to the man has been that same answer. "Something they/we will consider if theres a big enough demand for it." And more importantly, he was asked, he didnt bring it up as part of a roadmap of the games future direction.

Its always possible for a game even one making a profit to go F2P. They already have a FTP store that can be expanded with more content to make more money. Plus they would most likely still continue a sub system where those that dont get the sub will miss out on key things (ie dungeons, end game content or even level xp limits)

Most publishers are on there way out and are surviving on over charging the customer base with the main ips. So in the end Squar will do whatever they can to make MORE money. If they believe a FTP model with a optional sub or a loot box system or SOMETHING else then what is in place now, They will do it.

And remember, those that make these suggestions to corp are number crunches, people that DONT play mmos or most games. Annalists that predict how much money a product will make or might not make.

Funnily you should mention that, because it's mentioned in the articles on the first page.

There is a lot of security in the subscription model. Income is steady and consistent. This makes it very attractive to companies developing MMOs, which is why most start subscription and only go f2p if forced.

What forces them? Well, a need for a quick cash infusion (eg to pay back investors, which FFXIV doesn't have). But FFXIV has been making a steady profit for 4 years now... and quite a bit of a profit at that. SE isn't going to kill this golden goose.

This here, Yoshi actually discussed it a lot back in the day. A successful sub mmo is actually far better than a f2p for profit, SE would not gain money from going f2p in the long run, they also aren't hurting for sudden burst income.

Subs have greater profit over time (assuming the game is successful and retains players, which XIV does, many fail here for various reasons).
