Might as well share this story…I haven’t done much lately. The other day, I went queued into Hullbreaker Isle. I haven’t touched this dungeon since my first time going through it as a monk…at level 52. I go in as an AST, and as soon as I do, the gate drops and the tank takes off.

Before I can even cast a protect. I had to flag him down in chat to stop running so I can cast protect.

He leads me and another DPS on the side of the trees, away from the first mob – the other DPS goes straight for the mob and we go to deal with that. Keep this in mind. This part is very important.

So moving on, we make it to the bridge and the Sasquatch boss is standing on it. I haven’t been here in months, so I dunno if this is normal or not. But the Sasquatch isn’t letting our party pass, keeps throwing his poop at us, and we cannot target him. It takes us collectively about 40 seconds to realize that this Sasquatch isn’t going anywhere. The tank swears that he killed the necessary enemies – I throw up the suggestion that maybe that first mob we ending up skipping also had an important enemy that we needed to deal with.

I start heading back and the two DPS follow me – the tank is still sitting there, not understanding. He eventually comes along and we make our trek all the way back to the first mob…kill them, return to the bridge, and eureka! The Sasquatch is now in the boss room and we can fight him properly now. We get through the boss, missing the banana tree mechanic until the very end. Going on through the next part, the tank ends up opening a bunch of those treasure chests that spawn mimics.

I was a bit busy watching health bars and DPSing, but by the time we finish the 2 set of mimics, the tank just stops. And then just quits. No words or anything. He just quits. Which was odd…at least mention what the issue what instead of just abandoning. We cleared eventually, but still…the run left a bad taste in my mouth. Probably isn’t helped that I forgot the next boss’ bubble mechanic and it just wrecked us on the first pull when we finally got a replacement tank.

    The world may never know.

The first objective of Hullbreaker Isle, is that you need to defeat several Opo-opos (little monkeys) in order for the Sasquatch to move away from the bridge. One of the Opo-opos you need to defeat is sitting in that very first pack of mobs when you enter the dungeon, like you said.

The thing is, the dungeon objective actually states that you need to defeat the Opo-opos, so he should’ve known what this was the reason why the Sasquatch didn’t budge. (^_^; ) The same would apply with the Stone tablets, like Hyomin said.

This reminds me of that one time, when I was tanking Sirensong Sea as PLD, in full 270. The healer was a mentor WHM. When we got off the ship, I pulled the first two packs, and... wipe. That was my cue to take a look at their gear.

230 Hailstorm Cane. Their armour was mostly an assortment of HQ 255 gear. Some pieces may have been 230 as well. Very well. I decided to just hold my tongue, and do single-group pulls.

This mentor WHM wasn't exactly good at their job. Personally? I've healed Vault as SCH in mostly ilvl 130 gear because RNG hates me when it comes to dungeon drops. When I was levelling SB-WHM, Leveling roulette dropped me into Castrum Abania when all I had was an Augmented Shire Cane, because 3 hours of farming Bardam's Mettle refused to drop me the bloody WHM weapon. I'm not proud of that run, but what I do know is that even if you're undergeared, it's still possible, with a good enough tank, to throw out some DPS.
Anyway, on the second-last pull before the final boss, I decided to suggest that the WHM invest in some Shire gear. No swearing, no shouting, no condemnation, just a simple suggestion.

Instead, they decided to get defensive and snippy, claiming we'd been doing fine, claiming they'd spent all their poetics on mats (600 poetics for an Augmented Shire weapon is clearly a distant dream for a mentor, I suppose), and then deliberately unequipped all their gear to wipe us at the final boss.

After wasting everyone's time by running back all the way through the dungeon instead of taking the shortcut, they started pulling the final boss and running out of the arena, presumably to prevent us from kicking them. But, we did manage to kick them out, got a replacement healer that was properly-geared, and cleared the fight in one-shot.

It was... cathartic, to say the least, when I filled in a report on them, and had a GM PM me a few minutes later to confirm the details. I don't think a mentor should be allowed to keep their crown when they display that kind of behaviour. I also think that the current standards for mentorship are entirely too low and that they should be raised, but that's a dream as distant as the stars.

    This mentor WHM...
Yikes. I certainly hope the GM took the crown away, at the very least >.>

A solid 90% of "mentors" shouldn't have that crown. Crying because they got into an Ifrit EX, and demanding to be kicked while refusing to do anything to help, and wasting almost 40min of their own time when they could have easily had their penalty run down and queued for another(we - the other mentors, myself included, and the other people - REFUSED to kick that person no matter what, even though it wasted our time as well since they were a RDM if I recall). We eventually did abandon it, when there was less than 5min left because people STILL didn't follow the mechanics(Searing Wind staying away from party primarily messed up).

So I had an interesting Doma run last night. First of all, the PLD would not hold the mobs or bosses still. He was constantly running around and moving back and forth. This is Doma, the mobs turn around enough on their own. Second, before the second boss he just explodes or something, his HP just drops. I pop Riddle of Earth and take up tanking. Healer had no problem keeping me up and throwing out Gravity. The tank released as soon as he went down. Third, after all of this, I noticed I was stealing aggro and popped Diversion. Tank saw this and put up Sword Oath for some reason. And finally before the last boss, he pipes up, "My gear broke". Yea, we noticed.

And one more thing, my co DPS was a MCH and didn't AoE once. Good thing I have Invigorate and Purification.

    Pretty much the entire dungeon.

Healer was level 66 but struggled a lot during this run of Dzemael Dankhold. Idled a bunch, used Cure III like they thought it must be stronger than Cure II, and... ripped aggro from me (I'm the PLD) a ton when I was trying to do pulls. They also thought it was a great idea to stand in front of me, stand behind me, and would re-situate themselves back in front of me when I moved the mobs out of their way. The entire dungeon took about 45 minutes because we kept wiping -- including a 1% wipe to the last boss when the healer died.

Thought the image summed up my frustrations with DF healers nicely, lol.
