While we do not know the full extent. it has been stated that being flagged as a job rather then a class would lock down your potential to cross class. the up shot being the access to job only ability's and skills to help with roll definition.

i think it makes no difference what class you are gladiator or marauder. or lancer even. when you equip the job stone you become the job and leave all classes behind. so i'm running around as my PUG solo'ing some stuff my LS ask if i want to come tank something, i don't need to change to GLD to get paladin. i just put my stone in and become the job that that stone is. as for choosing abillities from marauder and gladiator while paladin, i don't think it works like that either i think paladin has a set amount of abilities for you to choose from they come from MRD and GLD. but will be on paladins list so you choose from paladins abilities which will only be some of MRD and GLD's not all of them
but i could be completely wrong that is just my thoughts on how it will work

What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion.
Yea, im not sure I like this....it could turn out that if you have EVERY class at 50, and access to every cross-class skill, you could be a better tank than a 50 paladin. Hope they keep the cross-class skills available to jobs, Its such a great way to reward players for lvling up multiple classes.
I would hope that when Jobs are implemented, they come with a new set of great abilities that can only be equipped by that job. Like a paladin has 10 or so Paladin specific abilities that only paladins can use, but still have access to every other cross-class skill we have learned.

I always wanted FFXIV jobs to be similar to the FFXI jobs, what I mean by that is that a job should be able to use more than 1 weapon type. A White Mage should be able to use staves, scepters, rods and wands, same thing with the Black Mage. A Thief should be able to use daggers, knives, shortswords and shortbows but no, SE decided to pull of this weird Class > Job system that I have never seen before in a game. Compare it to a game like the upcoming Guild Wars 2, their professions (Jobs) can use more than 1 weapon type (class). A warrior can use both melee weapons and ranged weapons, their Thief profession can use dual daggers and dual pistols, how cool is that? Not only can they use more than 1 weapon type on a single profession but they can also switch between them on the fly, effectively changing their playstyle.
Jobs have already been said to lock you out from using other class abilities, which is a good thing. Jobs were meant for party play and suffer in solo play. (They've said that already) So drawing on this you assume that means in solo play you wont have all the survivability that a class would when it comes to mixing. If you could still mix and match there would be no sense in making Jobs. Just make new classes.
Can we stop with the like this post crap. It's annoying.
And they already stated what's going on
Like this post if you knew this crap already and the OP is a month and a half late to the party.Seems like Paladin has access to Gladiator and Marauder skills. Marauder skills are related to paladin and can be uses, but other skills from other classes cant.
If thats the case, can we equip most marauder skills on Paladin?
Will Marauder be able to equip paladin?
It is also interesting to think of other jobs in this way. Will Black Mage be able to use cure spells from conjurer since Thaumaturge 30, and Conjurer 15 might be the requirement?
Or can Black Mage be equipped on Conjurer as well?
hmmmmmmm.
Like This Post if you would like Jobs to only have 2 Classes tied to them skill wise.
If this came to pass then their QA department would have done a horrible job. A paladin should be superior at tanking to any CLASS with every ability at their disposal because it is a specialty job.
Paladin tanking should be situational. Paladin should have the highest HP, best enmity generation, take the least damage,
However
GLA should keep flexibility. Thus it should be superior at DPS (because of off class weaponskills and buffs) over PLD and things like contagion, decoy, featherfoot and diversion should make it "slightly" higher than PLD on evading attacks over damage mitigation (again, because of flexibility) Allowing it to dual wield (I believe this was mentioned) should round out GLA as a decent hybrid as well.
My point is, when PLD comes out, GLA should be what a PLD falls back on when straight tanking isn't needed.
