This. You could call it apothecary and be fine, but calling it 'Chemist' would cause far too much confusion and would in the end be rather poor game design given that it shares all but three letters with a crafting class.
Even calling it an apothecary can still create a degree of confusion among the languages this game is made in that aren't English. To avoid any and all degree of nomenclature, the creator instead opted to pick up inspiration from the Cannoneer class in FFTA2, and although I'm not a fan of that name (still prefer my Grenadier), I'd still argue that naming it after any word that could not be linked to or associated with the Alchemist crafting class was the right call.
