I like the jumping, the freedom and I hope it gets implemented how it is, maybe not so cartoony but its good. I think it is needed.

My only problem is people acted like they pulled numbers out of nowhere and can future telling
Aion Zwei - Masamune

I was jumping 99% of the time due to boredom while reading your post...I have no problem with jumping, I thought the higher quality animations of 14 make it look less gimmicky then wow and I can see how it adds another level of dimension to the game, the lalafell animations look a little silly but i think they're running speed has always looked strange to me so i can't say i'm surprised nor really care all that much as i choose not to be a lalafel.
I know they're are a lot of threads on jumping but i think we can all agree that looking out into a field of players constantly hopping around looks silly. I never got into WoW but whenever i watched my friends play it seemed like they would hit the spacebar almost like a nervous tick whenever they were walking any distance longer then 10 seconds or a wait that took more then a minute.
My solution here is simple and to suggest some kind of minor delay when the player hits the ground so that it hurts on running speed efficiency. I'm talking about something so small that if a player were to jump 30 times in a row while running they would only arrive at their destination 25% later. I think that would be more then enough to stop 90% of players from jumping around town nervously.
I also believe when jumping offers no distance/hour penalty minor obstacles like fences or ledges offer no further immersion then the ghost fences and ledges we currently have in game now. Jumping should make me feel like i'm manipulating my characters position in space not an assumption that i constantly own all the space above my characters head with no real limitations.A properly timed jump over a fence is a lot more gratifying then passively spamming jump as my character approaches a fence.
While i think the modern day WoW player will undoubtedly be frustrated by this, I have a lot more faith in the mature audiences ability to respect realism and FFXIV's individuality, cause what we have now screams wow clone and a lack of imagination something that any new player will notice the minute they hit the largest key on their keyboards. I don't want to look out upon FFXIV's beautiful landscapes and notice the nervous twitches of an impatient player over the intricately designed gear that he potentially spent long hours trying to acquire.
Thanks for reading and even if you don't agree with me I at least hope I can inspire the community to continue to offer constructive criticism.
I think jumping should be more like Zelda, you can't do it whenever you want, you can only do it when you run off a ledge. That will prevent people from spam jumping in town and out in the field,.. in fact, it may prevent 99% of all jumping... >.>"
All jokes aside, I rather like jumping, although I do agree that the lalafell jump is silly looking,.. but Yoshi-P said they are still adjusting the jumps and that he thought they were a little high atm.

Jumping increases movement options, adds player vs. environment tactics, is a method of cancelling spells, and overall adds uniqueness to your character.
"WoW-clone" is about the most ridiculous thing I've heard. You said it when the new UI was released, you say it with the dungeon finder, and you say it with jumping. Just because WoW has it, does not mean it is a WoW clone. All of the aforementioned subjects are STANDARD. God forbid Yoshi and SE wants to make the accessibility of movement STANDARD.
Being tied to the ground, literally, is an archaic mechanic. Think of all the ridiculously small hills you could have easily jumped over in XI, and yet you had to walk completely around them.
Sometimes change is a good thing, and unfortunately you're letting your hatred for WoW cloud any other rational judgments.

Me, I'll live with a basic jump as people seem so keen, honestly I don't care either way with it.
yes i dislike the bunny people (ohoh add a bunny wabbit race!) but meh dont hurt anyone.
What i would like is basic jump = passive
Active jump is much smaller and stops AA/WS (thinking forward to PvP) or applys a large acc penalty.
Set jump points up and down terrain an over things (FFXIII style)

@Visch: Please, tell us more about 2.0 terrain mechanic and why jump isn't needed there

I'm against jumping if its the kind that's easy to abuse:
Jumping up or down an entire flight of stairs.
Jumping over walls and tall fences.
Jumping above peoples heads just for lolz.
Bunny hopping in place.
I'm in for:
Auto jumping. (like zelda)
Realistic jumping.
Rolling. (get away from danger or break a fall)
Climbing.
Jumping at specific locations (Click X to jump across)
I really hate the "BOING! bunny hop" jump, it looks so ridiculous and just doesn't fit in with how the game looks and its so easy to abuse.
Jumping can be masterfully done (Zelda, Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed etc) and still doing everything its supposed to do.

It's like...... Deja vue. Or maybe deja deja deja vue.
