You'll get a comm if I noticed you do something particularly impressive or if everything is dying REALLY fast. Otherwise I'm gonna auto-comm someone because I have maybe 3 seconds after the end of the last fight to do it and hell. .someone might as well get it.

I think it's boring to be a human punching bag and I do recommend the tank for that and if they get recommendations, it means they will be more motivated to que. Too much DPS players anyway, need more tanks!

You seem to have a dislike of tanks, you like insulting them. Insulting tanks isn't helping you. Insulting others in general isn't helping you.

We have no metric to judge DPS because Square Enix doesn't want bad DPS to get booed out of dungeons--the downside of no meters and an inflexible GUI is that things like this tend to happen and you can't see an above par dps unless they're particularly utilitarian :^)

This isn't true, or at least it's no longer true as of Stormblood. Healers in Stormblood don't push out as much damage relative to what they did in Heavensward VS the DPS. Most healers I run into in the SB era that actually try to DPS tend to only push out anywhere from 1k-1.6k+ DPS, whereas those that did during HW usually pushed out 800-1.2k+. It's not a very big increase. Meanwhile, good DPS players generally saw their damage nearly double from the jump between HW (typically 2k+) and SB (3.5k+).

Point being, in today's era, even one really good DPS will shave off far more time than a DPSing healer can ever hope to achieve alone. Though if the stars align and you manage to combine both at once, you end up with a monster Kugane Castle run that only takes 13 minutes to blow through.

Anyway, the other side is that since there's pretty much no clear metric as to how the DPS are doing performance wise besides the super vague 'how fast things are dying', you're not going to get noticed unless you are really, REALLY good. It also helps if you play a DPS job that tends to be infamous for having a large population of players that drag down the perception of what the job is capable of (this was pretty much HW Bard), because performing well on that job gets you noticed faster. Although you also run the risk of being paired with a Black Mage instead, in which people stupidly automatically assume that it's them dishing out the damage even when you're doing double the amount of damage they are.

(I've been playing the game for only two years, and earned about 1k+ comms in my first 9 months of playing as a White Mage before I switched to Bard, because I got tired of suffering through/carrying bad DPS. I decided to just deal with the queue times to get good at a DPS job, so whichever tanks and healers I ran into won't have to suffer with me around. I'm now sitting at 3.2k comms, meaning I earned around 2k+ comms as a Bard in a year and a half of playing. The downside is now I'm so attuned to Bard that I can't really play White Mage nearly as effectively anymore.)

As a tank, healers always get my commendation regardless of performance. As a healer, I'm more generous with the vote.

    Though, I hope SE allows us to commend the WHOLE party instead of having to pick one >_>;;

One thing is worth noting: High dps is not worth appreciating if the person it's coming from is a douchenozzle.

You can be a technically flawless player, avoid the avoidable, pump out optimal dps, use all your abilities to their potential... but if you rage in chat about how "bad" everyone else is, if you directly belittle specific people in your group for not playing up to your standards, if you say things like "you're so bad you should just die", then no amount of dps you do is going to garner any appreciation.

Being a decent human being is the first step towards being appreciated for the other areas where you excel. Failure at being a decent human being can't be made up for by any amount of "high dps".

I dunno, I usually get at least one comm doing expert dungeons on blm (4k+ single target, 5-9k aoe dps). I don't think people care about giving comms too much, i just give my comm to healer if he wasn't totally terrible or just ignore everyone and leave it like that.

    proof

...I still wonder why people commend healers and tanks by default? I can semi-afk and cast one Cure or Flash in 15 seconds and leave the dungeon with 3 commendations. Or I can work really hard on dps role, doing optimal rotation, using food and pots, and making 30 minute dungeon run into 15 minute and still leave with zero commendation.
Why people don't value high dps?
I commend DPS, I wish I could commend people as an entire group sometimes (please SE, put in a group commendation I would love that!) Several cases in point, Baelsar's Wall, Sohr Khai runs I did where I had so much fun, tank did big pulls and the dps melted the mobs, rarely stood in stuff... then I get "gg!" I'm like wth no, you made my job EASY, I did tell them that and thanked them. Barely had to touch the heals lol and spent more time dps'ing. I also commend dps who I notice look after their teammates regardless of skill level, or if the other tank/healer are a flaming douchebag Or the dps make me laugh... ok I will stop here, my point is, not everyone commends the tank/healer by default, and it is appreciated.

I skipped to final page for lulz and this has no quote for context. Did anyone imply that being a God of DPS entitles you to a comm regardless of attitude? It feels more like the author is lamenting that dps can go underappreciated.

So...in the context of this thread *is* that worth noting, especially when bad attitudes aren't dps exclusive?

    Anecdote below
Besides which tanks and healers can and in my experience are the more toxic people when things get toxic, because unlike dps they're virtually irreplaceable. Anecdotal though, feel free to dismiss.
