I just thought they called Wow characters, toons because of how they looked. If anyone is actually curious, the term 'toon' predates even World of Warcraft, going all the way back to Disney's Toontown Online (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toontown_Online). World of Warcraft characters are referred to exclusively as 'characters' by that game, a monicker going back to Dungeons and Dragons (1974), at least as far as I know, probably earlier. Ultima Online, among other games, used 'Avatar', a term originating in Hinduism for a god's descent to earth. Earliest uses of that term as a character is from Lucasfilm's mainframe-based Online RPG (yes, a persistent world MMO in 1986) Habitat.
That being said, the use of 'toon' for anything other than a character based on an animated cartoon seems rather out of place, though it is fairly common. However, correcting someone for their use of one term over another is particularly banal and pedantic, and by far the more egregious offense.

And how does a word get into a dictionary - http://www.merriam-webster.com/video/0032-howaword.htm
and for fun wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toon
Now, if the word isn't used in the context as often, then don't expect people to understand what the word you're referring to means. To be honest, toons means cartoons to me in the closest context it I've drew from it. However, when I read it, I've just dropped the word because it didn't make sense to me.
Such as word itself could have been dropped and still made sense; "looking at some of those fhqwhgads history on lodestone..."

I love the english forum, always 2-3 topics in 1 thread
i like using the word toon.
if you don't know what I am referring to when i use the word toon, I will happily define toon for you.
other then that, my toon, my choice to use whatever word I want to refer to it.
if you prefer to be offended at a word, be my guest.
i have better things to do with my time ... like play my toons!
/wave
Used to be just 1 character with this, now 7 people on XIVPads have it.
Very interesting.
10/10, would read this thread again
I am theorizing what the most difficult combination of faction leves to pull off would be, that doesn't involve any repeated leves, everything the biggest spending options while remaining as close to level 50 as possible; Here is my suggestion:
Brotherhood of the Broken Blade--- 1000 faction needed
Operation: Under Siege
Operation: Pulling Fangs
Operation: Up, Up, and Away
Operation: Shuteye
Azeyma's Shields--- 900 faction needed
Still Wanted: B'khenna the Phoenixfire
Wanted: Soft Evidence
Wanted: Violent Verdure
Wanted: Mammoth and Master
Horn and Hand--
N/A
I would love to see if someone can test this, to corroborate results, rather than offering to accept bribes... which is terribly bad form.
I don't understand why would anyone be offended.
Reminds me of one time where someone asked if I had a mule for FFXI. I said "sure, I have 3 mules" as in 3 additional content IDs under one PlayOnline account to hold my items from my main content ID. Little did I know "mule" he was referring to was an another full subscription PlayOnline account under a different PlayOnline account name. He was offended that I had to ask what he meant by "mule".
Some feel it's offensive because 'toon is as in 'cartoon', and thus it's connotations are exaggeration, absurdity, and folly. People in my opinion have every right to feel offended when the characters they've created, put effort into, and imagined things around, are put on the same level as that, and are well within their rights to ask people not to refer to their creations in those terms. I myself have said to people in the past, 'Please, I don't like seeing Forra referred to as a 'toon. I feel it suggests he's somehow of less value, and makes me feel rather uncomfortable. Would you mind not using that word when you talk about him?'
I've spent the better part of my two and a half decades studying the blasted language, so of course I'm a bit sensitive to words' meanings as they apply to the things I care about.
That being said I also feel that's as far as those rights go. If people feel compelled to refer to their characters as 'toons, well, that's their lookout. It's also their lookout whether or not they acquiesce when a person asks politely they not refer to their creative construct using a term that person feels degrades it. But.. well, ignoring so specific and polite a request is a bit... jerk-ish, if you ask me.
So.. well, I have to admit, in this case I think, from my own logic here at least, Zenaku may not have been entirely justified in asking someone not to use the word in a general context; although I think anyone should be free to point out when something makes them uncomfortable and anyone tries to capitalise on that's just mean. But he asked politely, and explained his reasons, so really a similarly polite refusal's as appropriate as bowing to his asking, or so I think.

Starting a fight over the usage of a word seems pretty immature imho, its just an abbreviation, makes things faster in conversation, nothing to get offended by, but thats just my opinion.
