If you start just now then they are already obsolete before you start outside of glamour. The max ilevel is 130.

I'm currently on the Singing Cluster step for an AST Anima. Once I saw the Anima minion, I opted to pick it back up. Glamour for my weapons aside, I always use minions, and having a really pretty rare one like Anima will be cool
It looks WAY better than the Fairies, anyway.
I tell everyone new to AT LEAST do the first part of the Zodiac, as it's full of unique job lore, sets you up for the first HM fights, and rewards a title.

I question how I ever passed these books the first time. Sure, I can solo all the leves and dungeons, but the fate camping just destroys my soul every time.
This.
just remove the freaking Fates requirement and I'll be happy like a little girl running through field of flowers.
Never had problems with the FATEs. They always showed up within a cycle or two. It's probably easier if you google the fate and see if it has any prerequisites. Then do the prerequisite or any overlapping fates in the area. Personally, I found the crystal sands/materia stages the most annoying. Light/density is just a grind.
Alexandrite is going to be a mild annoyance as nobody on my server calls ARR hunts anymore so they get solod and not reported. I'll have to use maps and I think they drop from fates too just by having the weapon equipped.
Might have to be on the quest itself though, it's been a while.
On a unrelated note, I'm never gonna get all those mount speeds![]()

In Mor Dhona you can get a daily quest that reward with Alexandrite maps.
Alexandrite grind is way breezy compare to those FATE camp because now you can trade 75 poetics for 1 Mysterious Map and get 5 Alexandrite at once. there is also daily in Mor Dhono which reward Mysterious Map.Never had problems with the FATEs. Yes, but what I mean is, you basically have to start the grind immediately at 50 to make it almost usable. The weapon starts at i90, and MSQ already rewards i90 weapons early/midway into the 2.x quests, and later rewards i110. The relic can't even outclass that until you get past the Alexandrite grind. The only way to make this feel mildly worthwhile is to not buy HW so you cap at 50, otherwise you could gain several extra levels just grinding the weapon.
On that subject, probably my least favorite step so far, for requiring low-grade materia that I had already trashed ages ago. That's one step that I'd love to see tweaked, so that maybe higher grade materia can count for multiples, and just reduce the multiplier the more you use.
Books were a grind, and I think probably should be reduced to 1 per stat. 9 books is too much.
As for light grinding, it's not too much trouble. There's always an abundance of Extremes being run for WT, and the occasional Coil. But I do think they should drop the requirements (or buff the gains), especially considering the biggest gains are from the 24-mans which are rarely run. There is also Frontlines, but I can't comment on that since I haven't tried during active hours.

As someone that recently finished up through to the light farm currently farming light, the only part of the ARR relics that needs touched is the book phase. It does nothing to encourage people to go back and help others in old content (I literally ran these unsynced because it took a third of the time joining a party did) and is simply incredibly annoying.
While I doubt it'll ever change, I'd honestly prefer if they switched the books over to requiring synced clears of dungeons and removing the Monsters and Leve sections, just leaving 3 synced dungeons + Fates, reinvigorating old content a bit.
