I find it more on a case by case basis, whether or not SCH is effective.
If everyone is doing their job, avoiding unneeded damage, good gear, etc.SCH is fine.
When you get a Tank that is undergeared/DPS stance/no CDs, etc. or DPS trying to be loldrgs and eat every AoE in existence, then SCH starts struggling a lot more than other Healers. The entire leveling process post 60 is much more difficult on a SCH because they have to make use of their entire toolkit to play effectively whereas the other 2 healers can somewhat halfass content and get the same result so it's a lot more stressful on.

So I've been having issues with scholar on large pulls as well and maybe I can get some help here then (which might also help that concern). I'll use an example that got us wiped today. It was after the first boss of Ala Mhigo and the tank pulled the first mobs (gorillas I believe) all the way to the entire pack of dogs. There was just so much little damage from all the dogs plus big damage from the gorillas that all the shields and excogs in the world couldn't keep up, so in that kind of situation, how do I handle it? I can only spam so many lustrates and his health was just being destroyed.
I honestly do enjoy scholar and want to learn to be good at it and from the sound of things they can indeed handle their own with large pulls so I'm at a point where I need to ask for guidance on this.
If the tank didn't use any cooldowns, that's on them.
If they did, Excog up (pre-pull if you can, 45 sec cooldown means it's up whenever you refresh AF and excog's definitely going to trigger), Aldo when you can (shield pauses damage, allowing Physick/faeirie to help) and slam Fey Union onto a tank if you have it (pretty sure by that pull you would be @ 100); huge pulls are basically THE time that Fey Union really shines.
EDIT: Eos's regen (whispering dawn, with Rouse) can also help, as can Eos's heal buff, if you're really struggling. Take Largesse - it increases your Aldo/Physick, but not your Lustrate (or excog or indom).

Throw an Excog on him before the pull as well as a Swiftcast Adlo, spread your dots during this small reprieve to help get the mobs down faster. From there use Rouse +Whispering Dawn on cooldown, Fey Illumination and Largesse for your Physick, and switch in as many shields as you can when you can as well as Lustrates when applicable. With that said however, how was the tank doing as far as cooldown management is concerned? I've handled that pull before and any tank who knows how to weave their cooldowns shouldn't be dropping faster than you can throw Lustrates on him.
Bye SCH'licia?

I would say this:
In ARR, it was not OP. It was perfectly balanced with WHM. Obviously guaranteed a raid spot because no one truly wanted two WHMs.
In HW, it was massively OP. HW fixed all of it's shortcomings in ARR, while keeping the ultra strong fairy heals and infinite MP. There were literally no drawbacks to SCH in HW (IMO). It was also guaranteed a raid spot for the entire 2-year HW span, while AST was very much excluded from 3.0-3.4, and once 3.4 hit and they were super-buffed, we saw that shift to WHM being excluded.
At the start of Stormblood, they were nerfed quite a bit. However, I still did not consider them "trash" or "OMG delete SCH" as many people here were claiming. But, with the 4.05 buffs, they are back to being balanced (IMO). Personally, I am much happier playing SCH now that I consider them to be more balanced than in HW when I considered them OP, mainly because I do not like playing OP jobs (this is the reason I have significantly scaled back my AST playing).

He was a drk and I know he popped living dead but outside of that I couldn't tell ya, I wasn't paying too much attention to it since I'm still getting used to sch after taking a break from it for most of HW. I used fey union on the boss but in this case it sounds like I need to save it for the bigger pulls so that will help for sure, and I can be earlier on excog too since the earlier I use it on him during pre pull, the earlier I can use it again it sounds like. One of those cases where I can start to see the options as you guys point them out, just need to practice (poor poor tank guinea pigs).
Do you guys spam embrace yourself or let that one do it's thing typically?

I have Embrace macro'd actually. It saves a LOT of headaches.

I can't think of a single boss outside of Savage that does enough consistent damage to a tank to do this (honestly most tank damage can be handled by Embrace in dungeons). Trash hits consistently over time, which makes it more suitable for Fey Union.
I have a mouseover macro for Embrace to force it to heal over whatever percentage HP, but only then because it's free and the faerie may as well be doing something. Since the tank should be the only one being hit in that pull, there's really no reason to force it.
