Based on the job and what it's capable of alone, perhaps. But arbitrarily choosing is a bad idea. You could be passing up a good MCH for a bad BRD or a good player overall for a bad one.
It's important to be clear on that.

It's exactly what everyone is saying here, the only kind of people that would make these kinds of questions would be people new to the game and for those people there's no reasonable way to know what they'll be good at or if they'll be good, so the best is to point them towards a job they have fun playing with, cause that will make it more likely that the person will be engaged enough to care about playing the job properly.
Most of the people that I answered that to would usually follow up with questions such as "what job does X?" which would normally open a conversation about the details of each job, those are the people that will be interested in the game, not the people that just want to know "the strongest job".
Then they should ask those questions instead of such a broad question that it's essentially meaningless. It's not so simple to make a decision though if you don't have information. I feel that's usually what people are asking for when they ask that. Which class is good/bad/challenging/simple. Which job is most sought after. What style of play do they require. What does it mean to be a tank. A healer. Etc.
Oooh, shiney...

Player skill determines how well a job plays, not the job itself. As long as i dont and up carry this "what and how i want" people in dungeons then ok. Most of the problems jobs like blm have are on se not the players but as long people play them se will not fix them . for now its blm, sun, brd, drg. This 4 just dont do as good as similar jobs can.
I have seen SMNs and BLMs handle mechanics better and push out higher numbers than SAMs and RDMs. I have been in Susano Ex farm groups with MCHs pushing higher numbers than melee. Job type does not instantly equate to better. I wish people would stop making this comparison because it is completely incorrect and ignorant. The player makes the job. And like someone else said: no idea where you're getting the idea that BRDs are not well off right now because BRDs are extremely viable in terms of personal DPS right now, just as they were at the end of Heavensward. As a BRD main, I personally get tired of the assumption that "BRD = low DPS" or "BRD = lazy player because BRD is easy to play." I may not be 95th percentile, world-first raider in game or on FFlogs, but my numbers from personal parses prove I am anything but weak. I know I have plenty of room for improvement, but I also know I am far from subpar.
Anyways. Before you start making comments like this, please educate yourself.
The player makes the job.
With regards to the topic: if someone asks me what job they want to play, unless they provide me with additional details (e.g., "I like healing classes" or "I prefer melee jobs as compared to ranged") the best advice I CAN give them is to try out each job (since you are free to test out each class after level 10, and all jobs save for the Heavensward jobs within the first expansion) and to pick the job that they enjoy the most. Players that are fresh and new to this game are not going to be jumping into Savage content their first day in the game, so throwing things like stat weights, meta comps, and job synergies at them is probably going to do nothing more than confuse the casual players. Especially if they have zero interest in actual min/maxing and just want to play for fun.
Most players that want to get into Savage endgame do research prior to learn about synergies and optimal builds and comps. But for the general, casual players that just ask the simple question: "What job should I play?", the response "Play a job that you feel like you will enjoy" is a perfectly acceptable response. Further discussion can lead to more specific responses and recommendations.

You guys should stop claiming savage / end-game content cannot be cleared without everyone playing the meta. This claim is ridiculous, wrong, absurd and appalling.
A full meta party can make things ‘easier’, but that does not make your party have better players in any way, shape or form. On the contrary.
Imagine two parties; a non meta and a meta party, clearing end-game content; so what if the boss goes down 10 seconds later with the non meta party than with the meta-party? If you call this casual playing then you have serious issues. Even more so if these non meta players actually play the class they love most.
Stop this elitist troll, you have no clue about being a good player and it is hurting the game and community.
Let the top 1% world-first play full meta parties in peace, stop trolling all other (good) players!![]()
"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'"
