I think the speed it levels at is okay, but I would like it if my chocobo would heal my SMN Egis. XD

Oh yes you will need training treats. Krakka root can be planted in the garden (or flower pots if you have a room/apartment) or there's also a fairly cheap array of chocobo food at the Vath beast tribe vendor in the Dravanian Forelands. A list of the various chocobo treats can be found at the link Bacent posted.

in addition i want to say that chocobos in a dirty stable get less exp, so keep it clean all the time. you have to clean it 2 times from very dirty to clean with some kind of glowing effect to get maximum exp. if it stops glowing, but still looks good, you have to clean it again one time to make it glow again. There should be an interactive sign post on the right side of the stable that lets you stable your chocobo, then you can go through the menu to deal with your chocobo specifically, train it and then immediately take it back out. You can train it once per hour. Note that feeding is for color changing and will not garner any experience for your chocobo (feeding/color changing will require the chocobo to stay in the stables for about 6 hours).
even when it glows you only get around 1% exp for your level up from one training session. a bit more on lower levels, a bit less on higher levels if i remember correctly. so you have to train it A LOT, every hour, over months to reach max level.
you can train your chocobo immediately after you put in the stable. other people have to wait 1 hour before they can train your chocobo after you put it in.
one other person can train your chocobo once per hour, and you can train it also once per hour. so you can get up to 2 training sessions every hour for your chocobo, if you can find someone who helps you.
do you know.. I used words like "could", even if you only play 4 hours per day, thats achievable in less than 2 weeks for lvl 19-20, even without touching challenge logs etc

Instead of increasing the leveling speed, I'm more for increasing the max rank and giving them new traits and skills.
Rank 10 on all roles since 2.x, and the chocobo get weaker with each expansion.
I think it's fine...
I had people helping me, though.
In my FC we had this thing going where EVERYONE fed EVERYONE'S chocobos when they were online. We grew Krakkas and onions (though I personally bought my food from Vath and only used the onions to level up) so food wasn't hard to come by. We don't have many people but most of us ran on different schedules so getting chocobo exp was not very hard - it's in fact very easy if it's a joint effort.
Speaking of which I haven't really helped out much since I got mine maxed out... should probably get to that soon.
Don't forget to do the weekly challanges for chocobo exp, and beyond that whenever you're out try to have it out whenever you can. Stuff like fates and map mobs give plenty of exp, specially if you're using curiel roots (even better if it's its special food), so stuff like leveling alts, grinding out fates for relics (did this for anima and got a lot of exp), even doing challenge log beside the chocobo exp ones (for example if you're doing the challenge log for fates), all these are pretty good for chocobo exp.
But yeah tl;dr, if you're in an FC where everyone is trying to level their chocobo, helping each other out is a cool thing to do and everyone benefits

The chocobos have been getting stronger since each expansion. Back in ARR they did like 300 dps and cured for a couple hundred. Now they do 1000 dps and their cures do over 5k. I've seen them crit cure for over 10k.
The rate at which they gain experience from battle is far too low, and at later ranks it essentially forces you to only train it in the stable if you want to see reasonable gains. But I suppose this isn't so bad, since raising its rank is intended to be a long-term exercise. It would just be nice if battle experience was a little better.

Stabled exp is fine as is for the effort you put into it (stopping by your stables every hour isn't really effort), but yeah this would be nice.
Would also be nice if the max rank was increased :P
