Y...you mean half as long? "Twice shorter" literally makes no sense.
Also Exdeath has a VERY specific design. They are not going to shorten his cape.
Why do you need the ring for positionals anyway? Its obvious where the back and flanks are on both these bosses.
Why don't you just use true north ? (Don't play melee job but I thought the point of that skill was to use in times when it's hard to do positional properly.)
My only issue with his Cape is it hides the markers for fire 3, it happened once when I 'collided' with another melee and we both died.
My own fault really, though I haven't let it happen again <.<
Someone else mentioned this, but this is pretty much what True North is for out of the DPS shared skills. Now granted I've only done this fight one time on my initial clear, but this seems like a tailor made use for this skill.
The others, I get your point, especially on the 2nd boss, but Exdeath is pretty obvious which way it's facing without the need for the circle

Several people have mentioned True North here - the ability is on a 2.5 minute cooldown, so it won't always be available. Since many of the bosses also have other mechanics where they face a random direction (or face a party stack), using True North just to ensure regular positionals is kind of a waste.
A lot of melee don't actually move a full 90 degrees to hit their positionals - it's more efficient to ride the corner where the Flank/Rear meet to minimize movement. The most reliable way to distinguish that is the targeting ring, so if the ring is covered, it either becomes a guessing game, or forces extra movement. It's a bigger issue for the second boss since it's a spherical blob - if as a melee you can see the eye, you're likely standing in the wrong place.

While not exactly a fix, a work-around for the 2nd boss would be to have the tank mark himself, then you'll always know where the boss is facing. It's always going to be facing the tank unless it's doing it's look-away cast during the tentacles, in which case you should be moving to the safe spot anyway.
