How are Monk's and Samurai right now in terms of dps?

Right now I am focusing on my Paladin for tanking. But i know that I will end up get bored of tanking one day and want to switch to dps. I have always like playing as melee type damage dealers and in this game both Monk and Samurai both look fun. Now I'm not asking which is best. I just want to try out both and then decide from there.

Both are very solid, and are the highest dps jobs currently in terms of personal dps.

Monk at it's base hasn't changed since 2.0, the gcd rotation is literally the exact same as it has always been, just a few new ogcd skills added. It kind of makes them boring in a way, if you have played the job as long as i have. What they did get over the course of 2 expansions amounts to downtime management, no other job requires you to use your downtime as effectively as MNK, and you will almost always find yourself busy if you are trying to optimise your dps. And you will be rewarded for it.

Samurai is new, shiny and is a great melee job, it feels fluid and the big hits do make you feel all powerful when they are done right. The rotation gives you something you don't get with monk, and that is a lot of options if you are trying to get the most out of it based on what is happening. Downtime, not so much, you press one button and stand perfectly still for 15 seconds.

Both are very fun jobs in their own right, monk is my comfort zone but I was disappointed that the rotation itself didn't really change beyond the opener, so I went with new and shiny. Both are also very powerful, SAM in higher personal damage, MNK with a slight damage buff to physical party members and great healer utility with mantra, sadly often overlooked because damage is the god-king of all contributions when it comes to serious content, but there nontheless and very useful. I would welcome either in any content, or even both, though if you only have 2 melee slots, you'll likely want a NIN in there.

As the game's balance currently stands, I find it hard to recommend Monk. Ninja does equal or greater damage when played by an equally skilled player, but has much more meaningful utility, and Samurai destroys it in damage output. If they bring up Monk to be capable of inflicting about 92.5-95% of the damage inflicted by an equally skilled Samurai, then I would say go for it.

(Separately, I would also say from my perspective having played it for years, the changes from SB in adding Riddle of Fire and RNG-based skills makes the job feel a lot less satisfying to play than it used to.)

Samurai is pretty fun, though, and will (barring possible nerfs) hold a solid spot on raid teams and is fun simply for unloading raw damage.

That shouldn't really be the case. MNK's dps should be higher than NIN's by 5-10% assuming the same gear and skill level.
If a NIN is doing more damage then the MNK is doing something very wrong or it's 10 ilvl lower.

Some misinformation here. Monk deals more damage than Ninja in a group. It's close, and certainly much closer than HW, but to say an equally skilled player will do more as Nin is simply incorrect according to the data we have from fflogs. Additionally, according to fflogs, Monk does about 94% of a Samurai's dps (75 and 90th Susano percentiles). This is exactly where you're saying they should be. They also bring more utility than Sam.

Mnk is in a pretty good place right now, honestly. Play both and go with the one you find more fun. You should be welcomed by groups as either.
