personally, I wouldn't want to hide it, rather its skin should change with your weapon. or hell, make it an offhand item.

I don't mind the floating rock, i just don't like the animation where your character is constantly holding it up when you have your weapon drawn. I would like it better if it was just floating around your character and only goes towards your character's hand when they are getting ready to cast spells. It doesn't look good and it isn't great for balance either.
