The basketball example only makes sense in the paid gym sense. What if you go into a sports shop and buy 30 basketballs. You have the money, you buy them. Person comes in after you and notices you with all the basketballs and throws a tantrum about how you took all the balls and says you should give them up. They bought the basketballs fair and square, they should get to keep them. Just because you pay a subscription doesn't entitle you to a house, just as them paying a sub doesn't entitle them to all the houses. What it comes down to is availability and gil. They had the gil, the plots were open. Is it selfish? Probably. They have those houses though, and it should stay that way unless SE makes a formal statement about it.
