I ran into the issue tonight. I decided to try DX9 for the gene and that was the only change I did. Went back to DX11 and no issue. Running an AMD card (R9) and have 16GB of DDR4 memory. As others have stated, it could be a memory leak and it's just more noticeable in some rigs than on others.

TL/DR if you're running 9.0c, try DX11 to see if it solves the issue.

Just thought I'd chime in and add that I am also experiencing this exact problem seemingly since Stormblood.

    System specifications:
    Windows 7 64-bit
Steam version of Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood
Nvidia GTX760 Ti OEM card running recent drivers (I did try updating them after the first FPS drops but saw no improvement)
    16 GB RAM
Using the most recent DirectX compatible with my system

Start game in DX9, game runs as normal for 3-4 hours and begins experiencing massive fps drops and freezing at random intervals, ultimately becoming unplayable in some instances until the game is restarted or crashes, where it will again run 3-4 hours unhindered. I did try switching to DX11, which ran smoothly for a bit, before ultimately ended with an immediate (but temporary) loss of video from my monitor and game crash with no prior warning. As soon as the game begins experiencing the issue, exiting the game always results in a crash displaying this error message:

An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV.

    ffxiv.exe+369A36
    ffxiv.exe+4FA52
    ffxiv.exe+52635
    ffxiv.exe+C19EA9
    kernel32.dll+1336A
    ntdll.dll+39902
    ntdll.dll+398D5
Though I haven't experienced teleporting between areas to cause the crash, loading higher resolution models may have something to do with it, for some reason dropping from the top of the Holstrey tower in Kugane to the ground has caused me to crash twice. Oddly, once the trouble starts to manifest, my Steam screenshot function no longer works, though the rest of the overlay does, and attempting to use the screenshot feature integrated in the game also caused a crash.

Hopefully Square Enix addresses this issue, since it seems to be affecting more than just a few people.

This is incredibly frustrating. I just started having this same issue, although I don't receive any error. My game simply runs normal for a maybe 5-10 minutes and then the framerate plummets. I'll go from 70-80 fps in town down to 20-30 and nothing fixes it. I have to restart my whole PC just to get the game to run normal again-- but it only lasts incredibly briefly.

The game was running fine just last night.

I have an Nvidia 980ti on the latest drivers, Windows 7.

I just had this start happening too, though i did just mess with my memory timings/frequency. considering the error message references memory locations (stack trace?) I think it'd be prudent for people to check their memory for errors and back off OCs if they are overclocked. However, seeing as it apparently happens agnostic to computer, maybe not. Still, it only just started doing this to me either before or immediately after logging in as I said and I've been playing for a total of 3-4 sub months with a 1070, so it's not a (solely) radeon thing.

Not a RAM issue for me. Checked it twice.

I've been encountering something similar since SB Launched, It plays fine for the most part but every 10 minutes or so the FPS will drop to 10 or so for about 5 seconds then go back to normal, FFXIV is the only program this happens with. Tried everything minus reinstalling windows and im not doing that.
Im Running Sapphire RX 480 8gb
    AMD FX 8350
    32 GB DDR4 Ram

Also ran a memory diagnostic and found nothing. My system isn't overclocked. Hoping this upcoming patch might include a fix.

EDIT: As of patch 4.01 this problem is still occurring for me.

is there a fix for this yet. I lowered all my graphics settings and still cant play in either dx9 or dx11 using r9 390x, 32gig ddr3 amd 8350. it plays fine in windowed mode but not full screen, or full screen windowed mode. I will try changing my pc resolution under 4k and see if that allows me to play for more than 10 minutes.

PS. I already wiped my computer and reinstalled windows 10 with all updates and then installed only ffxiv from scratch. waste of 2 hrs since I deviced to also blow out all my fans and put new thermal paste and everything thinking it might be an overheating issue. its not.
