The HW jobs started at 30 because otherwise they would need a starting "class"
I'm not sure why RDM and SAM started at 50, seems kinda like "we need to prevent the new DPS from sitting in the queue, or leveling entirely off PotD", which they did anyway.
If they get rid of the cross-class/role system entirely and the entire class->Job system, they can start everyone at level 1 and no love will be lost. In fact, I think that might be the only real solution to prevent people from just leveling one job to the point they can take another than already starts at 30 or 50. The level 30 and 50 jobs all have shorter storylines as a result.
This role system is too half-baked. Give everyone back their skill equivalents, because all the role system does is tell the player these skills are optional, when things like Esuna and Protect certainly are not.
The correct fix, IMO, to the role system is to not have skills that are common between jobs, but to have skills that are unique but form the same basic thing. If you want to reduce the clutter, take a page from AST's Nocturnal/Diurnal Sect, and replace those skills with differently named skills when the sect is active.
eg Aspected Helios on AST has no additional effect without a sect active, Regen when Diurnal is active, and Shielding on Nocturnal. So actually call those "Helios II, Regen Helios, and Shielded Helios" with different colored icons. Right now too many of AST's skills look like stars or squiggly lines.
Anything that is actually part of the toolset (eg a self-heal, a stun, a knockback, and an AOE) should not be "optional", and unfortunately that's all the Role System does, is make things optional, when they are considered mandatory.
Like give Esuna back to WHM, there was no need to pull it off, give Scholar Leeches back and put it at the same level as Esuna, and give Astrologian back Exalted Detriment. These are essential skills, and putting them on the Role system just told players it's optional. Give 15% Protect back to WHM, don't give Scholar or Astrologian "Protect" give them something else that has the same idea with a twist. eg Astrologian could have something like "Nocturnal Moonlight" (Nocturnal Sect) or "Diurnal Sunlight" which either does the 15% protect effect or a 10% effect and a 5% damage boost. Scholar could have "Fay Glow" or something that if Eos or Selene is summoned, the 15% protect effect applies to Eos and the damage speed applies to Selene (basically Fey Wind always active with Protect at 10%.)
Those two are the skills that I think healers are most upset with anyway. The other skills do feel optional. Lucid Dreaming, Swiftcast and Largesse feel necessary, but largely aren't if you aren't just spamming skills because the oGCD is available. Lucid Dreaming (formerly Shroud of Saints/Luminiferous Aether) and Largesse (Formerly Divine Seal) were both WHM abilities before, so it feels like these were stolen from WHM, while AST only gave up one, and Scholar gave up none.
Because new Jobs don't start at level 1, they never learn how to use their skills progressively via the regular content/storyline dungeons, and because gear drops like candy in all the dungeons, you also never have to buy anything. However PotD and job potions screw this up by not having you do those dungeons enough to collect the gear to be equipped for the next dungeon, No, now PotD just lets you grind all the way to level 50 and you can just buy the level 120/130 gear with poetics tomes until you get to level 60 and then buy the 260 gear.
Anyone remember how long at ARR's release it took to actually do Amdapor Keep or Wanderers Palace? How people were raging about needing full darklight (considering that Darklight was ilevel 70 and the gear the dungeon dropped is ilevel 55) to do it? Yeah those were the days when dungeons felt balanced.
I've actually taken to leveling/acquiring gear for jobs I had not leveled by going through the old content in undersized-party mode on my main role, farm the gear I need for the other role, and then once I have at least 4 pieces of left-hand gear, go do the quest for that level and then repeat until level 50. Dispose of the previous gear after.
At this point I'm not sure what incentive there is to do the 1-49 content if all your jobs are at level 50 or above.
