    Guys, please do not go on about WoW, but this game has the perfect example of why I am glad there is no aerial or underwater combat.

    I remember when I had to a quest to grab some item at the bottom of the ocean and a shark aggros me. I turn and start casting. Great, no problem. Then on another character that was a PLD, I came across the same thing. I thought "This should be fine. I had no trouble with my caster..... OMG, nope!" I kept seeing on my screen that I am not facing the target. WHAT?!? But, the target is in front of me, or so I thought.

    The problem turned out to be that I was facing straight ahead and not down, yet with the current camera angle, it looked like it was in front of me. So, I wasted a good 25 to 35 seconds trying to reposition myself. Then to throw a twist in the mess, there were times that I was facing, but the mob happen to be out of each. Because the mob was slightly to the side and my character will not auto run/turn when under water, I kept getting out of range messages.

    After this, I avoided all quests that had combat underwater and would always swim away because it became a nightmare. Having that Z axis influence combat distance made things awful.

    Oh God... I enjoy enjoyed swimming in WoW during Cata... But the combat was a nightmare.

    Good gravy no lol have you played a game with aerial or water combat....they are horrendous and a huge burden on movement, I like swimming and flying as is.

    it's not very different from regular gathering for MIN and BTN, occasionally there's a little bit of vertical movement but not much. it's still basically 3 pairs of 2 nodes laid out in a triangle pattern.

    Just because something hasn't been done well before, doesn't mean it can't be done well in the future.


    That said...
    I'm not sure how well 3 dimensional combat would work in ffxiv...

    Yeah he also promised that people wouldn't ever lose their houses for not playing but look what happened there. I think both aerial and underwater combat would be a good addition if done right because as of now having both areas empty makes them boring. To everyone saying "Lel Nope" and "It's terrible", please provide constructive feedback and remember just because you don't like it doesn't mean the next 100 people next to you don't. Some of us love this kind of thing.

    It's not going to be done right because vertical movement as it stands now is not fluid enough. redesigning that is a massive undertaking that should be spent on creating other kinds of content instead. if they do something like this, they would need to fully commit including underwater/aerial dungeons, raids and trials. otherwise it's not nearly worth the development time it would take.

    If you ever played WoW you would know just how bad it would be if ever implemented for any melee class. Vashj'ir was a freaking nightmare, lots of "you can't hit them because of hit box detection; but they can hit you all day long".

With how finicky the targetting system in this is, aka: You're out of range!, when you're character is slightly faced away from the mob.. can you even imagine how awful this would be underwater?     A lot of people in this thread seem to think that if one likes underwater combat then they must have never tried it. I did play WoW and I chose to level in Vashj'ir on my 9 or so characters, many of which were melee. What is hard about viewing your character from the side to adjust yourself on the z-axis (jump/descend keys) and then just turning towards the mob? It takes like a second. I think it's an issue of learning the character controls.
