    Spoilers: nice touch in Stormblood MSQ

    I just wanted to say how much I liked the story in early Stormblood MSQ. Specifically when
    the WoL gets defeated in battle for once. That, after slaying countless primals and garlean generals and whatnot, he got soundly beaten. I found that surprising and a very nice touch to the story, making my character more real and believable. And in particular, I like how this was executed, by having us actually lose a battle without prior indication, and not just tossing it into a cutscene.

    Thank you for that experience.

    Ps. I'm not far in the story yet, so please don't spoil anything after this here. ^^;

    The irony is,
    we're actually not soundly beaten - yes he practically no sells everything we threw at him, but we still managed to hold our own (the only one who could - he took out Pipin and Aliasie almost immediately, but we just got back up) for quite a while until Zenos pulled out some magical plot coupon that beat us down. And still we got up, earning us another beatdown.

    Even then, the player begins to struggle to their feet where he actually loses interest and withdraws, muttering "Pathetic". AND, Zenos actually didn't even come out of it unscathed - we broke his katana, which anyone who knows about warrior codes of chivalry, is the worst thing that can be done to a warrior. Yes my pride took a battering, as my character memorably answered Raubahn, but I didn't go down without a fight. Enki went down kicking, screaming and defiant to the bitter end. And broke his sword to boot!

    So in some ways, we actually won that fight, a small symbolic victory yes, given the utter hiding the XIIth and their quisling allies gave the rest of the Resistance, but a victory all the same.

    So yeah, I agree with you Leo, that was an amazing scene - thank you SE for actually showing our character as having two clay feet, instead of pushing us dangerously into Mary Sue territory which was actually starting to get a little tiresome. And showing all too clearly the fatal flaw of being put on a pedestal.... it's a long way down to fall.

    You just made this scene even better, Enki, pointing out some details I hadn't thought of. I feel so proud of my character Aegis now.

    Truth be told, I felt that was fairly cheap in execution.

    I'd have preferred the fights to be actual, tough fights, where you're expected to die in the AoE fest and "winning" nets you an extra line of dialogue or two along the lines of the first fight with Gades in Lufia, or the hellfire fight in Ys. The way they did it was just like:"Yeah, yeah, I get it, you're supposed to be reaaally strong. Can we get on with it now? I'm getting bored."

    I looked at it from a macro-perspective; the entirety of Zenos' life can be summed in one word: ennui. He has nothing left to interest him, and this is seen quite plainly in how he fights. While others are dashing around, bobbing to and fro, trying to find an opening or to dodge an attack, Zenos is just strolling through a park on a warm summer day, swatting away the occasional fly that buzzes a bit too close. This attitude sets the stage for who he is as a character, and ties in to your later meetings with him. Seeing him move at more than a slow mosey is a sign that you have his interest. Seeing him move with the true blinding speed he's capable of is a sign you have his attention.

    It feels like this was the first time in a long time where the character had to learn how to become stronger, no maccguffins, no blessings of light to make it easy, just plain improvement, like every other person.

    It reminds me of what we once were in 1.0 before the WoL bit became just about everything about our character. And I love that that is the core of our character, not some bloody legend.
