EDIT: of course some places require more than others, and I do not expect this to happen in an instant, but by adding more and more places where to swim with updates and eventually having all the old zones supporting it.
It's more then just removing the walls. As mentioned above... there's quite a bit too it. In addition to adding in the swim/dive function.

Plus finally adding the crazy amount of testing to ensure no one gets stuck or access parts they're not supposed to.

It'd eat up a lot of time for a game where people are either in only the new stuff or in a town. Don't get me wrong i love quality of life updates but I don't see them doing it for everything

The dev time would have better been spent anywhere else.
cause it's great for advertising. completely expected this when they said there's no fighting underwater.

Also great for storytelling, as it allows for another type of setting for characters, places, and plots.

But if you choose to be cynical about it, sure it's a nice feature to add to advertising as well.

I couldn't disagree with you more, for me mmorpg is all about the world, and having more interactive and more explorable world is one of the top priorities for me. It makes the game feel more like a world rather than a guided instance which has sections blocked off. ffxiv already is one of the poorest mmorpg's in this regards (2.0 areas are honestly pretty small and restrictive) but they keep getting better every expansion. I agree that the loading screens are pretty weird, but like I said this game already feels clumsy and has a shit ton of loading screens and I believe it has something to do with the original desing of the game which is obviously bad. My dream would be to have a full open world like wow but I realise it is not possible, so at least I would like to have the maps feels as non-restrictive as possible.

yeah I understand that it's not just removing the walls since obviously the areas that are behind it are unplayable (probably no collision) but it also isn't something that cannot be done across multiple patches.

I support this. The patch notes made it seem like there would be swimming in a few new places. I'm not asking for a revamp like costa, but there are some great places that would be sooooooo great to swim in.

Dravanian Hinterlands, the housing areas, the pond outside the church in east shroud.

If it's really about storytelling, more of the MSQ would involve it. I'm not done with the MSQ yet but only the Ruby Sea actually had storyline relevant to swimming. Up to Lv 68 MSQ there were at least 2 other opportunities for it that i saw that they didn't care to take advantage of. maybe Lv 69-70 MSQs will have me drowning in it but i doubt it. call me a cynic if you want, but those are very surface level observations i think.

As someone who loved Vashjr in WoW seems a waste not to do underwater combat.

Gawd what I wouldn't give to have a truly open world that let us run/fly/swim wherever we wished... not like the size of the zones is any better than open world games...

OK. Where? The only other ARR areas I can think of that'd justify swimming being added is Silvertear Lake and Camp Bronze Lake. Everywhere else is either visibly too shallow or flat out too small to justify spending resources and time on.
