More importantly, he's just using it to get the requirements for SAM. He's not boosting through the story. In fact, boosting now means he can still get the experience from stories/dungeons pre-HW as well as all the HW content before even getting to SB. Chances are he might not even need to side track at all if he sticks to SAM.

All I will add to this discussion is that SAM is painfully boring to play prior to level 50. You don't gain access to Yukikaze until 50. Thus, you have no access to Setsu - and you cannot execute Midare Setsugekka. While this is fine for open-world, because you start at level 50 - it is difficult in low-level story dungeons and trials. You also have zero access to kenki until level 52.

I tried running SAM through a pre-50 dungeon. It made my soul cry. It's as if the job was not designed with the intent to ever be used in any low-level dungeon roulette.

If you can grit your teeth with a (temporarily) stunted SAM - surviving purely off of the love of the job - then you should be fine. Just want to warn you.

[QUOTE=LunaFaye;Palace of the dead is your friend, If you have that level 60 class, or even just class that's a level or more higher than your current one (lvl 50 sam), you get immense exp bonus after finishing the floors. Queue time is quick, It doesn't take long to get the 10 levels.[/QUOTE]

Here's the other problem..if you start a new character with the intention of turning it into a SAM and you purchase the level 60 boost, say, a monk boost so you can use the same equipment on the SAM....you are screwed....you have level ONE....everything, no duty finder, no teleport ability....NOTHING....AND no money if you happen to be FC'less......no access to market, and everything that is contingent on a quest, mission, anything that requires to do something FIRST....your screwed...
basically, I don't know whither to shi* or go blind, and I'm almost 100 US dollars into this nightmare

You're really not screwed, because you have all the quests to unlock all that stuff. You'd be able to go through the entire quest line from 1 to 70 as a samurai. Sure, you'd be massively over-leveled for most of it, but there are a lot of people who don't really mind that. At least it means you can just go through everything in order without hitting roadblocks when you need to level up for the next part. And for people who want to play through the game as samurai (or red mage), they can.

How are they screwed? They have a horribly over-leveled and over-geared MNK. They can solo almost every 2.0 dungeon and trial with that. Don't even have to wait for bad DPS ques. Just go in unsynchronized.

Do that until they hit Copperbell mines around level 17 - and then go grind Palace of the Dead with SAM up to 60. Then, pick up where they left off at level 17 MSQ content.

It took me one day to take SAM through PotD from level 50 to level 60. Granted, that was a long day. It also includes the fact that the DF was toast for most of the day.

If a person does the job boost potion and decides to opt out of the story skip potion, they're going to have to go through the motions of lower content.

You wouldn't even need this part. You don't have to be level 60 to do level 17 quests. There wouldn't be any level grinding involved as 60 levels worth of quests will give more than enough XP to gain those 10 levels.

True. To clairfy, my statement was made under the assumption that MNK was simply a means to an end, with the goal of getting into lvl60 SAM shoes as soon as humanly possible.

EDIT: I think I need to revise the direction of my original recommendation, now that I've had some time to digest information.

To the best of my knowledge, the market board is not locked out for a new player. You can buy to your heart's content the minute you get boots on ground in your starting city. You just can't sell until you unlock retainers later on in the story. Note, this is predicated on the fact that I believe you can buy from day one. Maybe this isn't true. I have rarely ever used the market board. Let alone at level one. That, and I'm not at home right now to test the theory. I googled it and I can find no instance stating that there is a block on the market until a certain mission or level.

Regardless, the job boost potion gives you 300k gold.

Start in Ul'dah as PUG. Job boost him. Unlock SAM. Switch to SAM. You'll be given level 50 head/body/hands/legs/feet/weapon for free as part of the unlock quest. Go to the marketboard and buy rings/neck/wrists/earrings/belt. There. You have a level 50 geared SAM. Level him up either through PotD, PVP, and/or the main/side quests as you go. When you hit 60, switch to the shire gear you got from the job boost.
