His story was explained if you talked to him in the Waking Sands at various points throughout the 2.0 story. He is half highlander and half garlean. Born as a result of a garlean deciding to have his way with his mother. I find it fairly understandable that he would be ashamed of his heritage.

Interestingly, I was playing this in Japanese yesterday and at that line he straight up says that his father was Garlean and his mother Ala Mhigan. I guess for the English translation they expected you would have already talked to him in the Waking Sands and remembered?

It's interesting that he would have what appears to be a Garlean surname if his parents weren't (I assume, if it wasn't a consensual relationship?) married. I wonder if Lentius is the Garlean equivalent of a bastard-name (ala Greystone), or if his Waking Sands dialogue might have been yet another English localization blooper, and his parents' relationship misrepresented. In fact, I kinda hope that turns out to be the case, since I'd personally find a Garlean defecting because he or she fell in love with one of the locals a more compelling story than 'har har, the Garleans regularly abuse the local women, look how evul they are!'
