You'll probably see it on the cash shop for 50 bucks in a year or so.

This. I remember thinking exactly the same thing when the last one was announced. It reached a point where the length of time for those rewards was absurd. Someone picking up Stormblood today wouldn't see the Squall outfit for four years. If that continued, some items would be completely unobtainable as the game likely wouldn't last as long as the requirement for anyone who wasn't playing at release. Keep in mind, Veteran Rewards was never just a thank you to long term players. It was meant to incentivize maintaining your sub indefinitely. That incentive is lost when the rewards are so far off you may not even remember them.
good for you.I've long since given up on the whole 'collect all of X' aspect of FFXIV. SE has just been too shitty about it in order to extract more money from people (event items not obtainable after the fact without paying extra; Mog Station exclusives; Collector's Edition exclusives; Veteran Rewards; etc.).
If it were just one or maybe two of those things (say, Mog Station and Collector's Editions), I could sort of "wall off" those items into a separate category and not worry about them. As-is, though, I feel like I'm having to put so many asterisks on my collection, I just don't care to bother at all.
In short - SE can do whatever they want with the Veteran's Reward system, so far as I'm concerned. I sub when I want to sub, and unsub when I get bored. There is absolutely nothing they can do item-wise to influence my decisions, because they've abused the item manipulation so thoroughly already.
So they turn from something anyone can get if they stay subbed long enough to something you might loose out if you are not subbed at this time span? For me this sound worse. Especially since it forces you to sub at a certain period to get the reward.
Yes the time for the recent rewards are a little too much but I hoped that the new system would be something with tokens. Like you get a certain amount of tokens per subbed month and with that you can buy the rewards. So if someone wants a certain outfit from the old rewards they can simply save those tokens for that. Nobody is forced to be subbed at a certain time and you will get what you truly want. And for veteran players you will simply put new things in.
Not really sure why they went that way. Maybe the period will be at times where people normally unsub so they will have to keep paying even if they did not plan to play at that time? It just feels bad to me.
Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.
From what I understand they are not ending the old vet reward system. They are just not adding anything beyond 1440 days. This new 90 day sub bonus system is to augment the existing vet rewards.
As for why not tokens? They are likely going to build up a stock of the new sub bonuses before switching to getting tokens every 90 days.
It's kind of a dishonest move...
I'm sure we all remember fondly how Yoshida claimed that he was perfectly ok if we go play something else during downtime. This, for me, is a very subtle way of saying "Yes, go play something else, but keep paying for the game and connect frequently".
Because if, like me, you intend to play one month for each patch and unsubscribe in-between, you're screwed. Worse, if you let your subscription run without even playing, it will automatically suspend after 45 days of inactivities, so you'll don't get the reward...
It's not 'dishonest'. I said this earlier on in the thread but anybody who is genuinely serious about collecting rare minions, mounts and exclusive glamours is very likely to be subscribed to the game consistently anyway. A player that drops their subscription and only plays in short bursts whenever a new content patch goes live isn't likely to be as invested in such acquisitions.
You won't die if you don't have that item o.o It's just a token of appreciation for those that kept loyal to the game in the peak times and on the slow times. But yeah you're free to do anything else, the mount wont give any advantage for anyone, its not a faster mount or anything. We're getting a cool item just for being subbed unlike world of warcraft and others and you guys are still complaining. It's kind of a dishonest move...

Don't get the complaining about this. If you want the mount you stay subbed. It's an effective business move. Those complaining about this being shitty...SE aren't your friends. They want your money. Also it's a mount. There's plenty of others. Honestly it's not even a good one either.
Player
I bet the people who were crying about the Vet rewards are kicking themselves now. You reap what you sow!
If you really want the item(s) being advertised during that campaign then sub for the amount of time, if not then you didn't really want it.
