As much as I like to imagine the roleplay community is entirely aware of Balmung's existence, you can't bank on everyone knowing about it. Additionally, players who join a server because it's large may not know why. It's a rather ridiculous notion considering the vast majority knows of Balmung's true nature, but having an RP tag on the Balmung server would set an official marker on it. I kinda agree with OP on this one.

I'm not a role-player and have been on Balmung since 1.0's beta, when it was actually Besaid (and Fabul). That's a long time ago. You're insinuating that I'd be willing to lose all of my friends, our FC house, my personal house, most of my gil, real-life money for server-hopping and countless other things, just so SE can make us the "official RP server"?
We already have a bad reputation amongst other servers, so please let's try not to exacerbate that with inane suggestions.
Slapping on the RP-label would give the impression that it's somehow enforced. Based on what I've seen about a bazillion times already, some members of the RP-community would then throw a hissyfit because of all those non-RP'ers and their disruptive behaviour.
So it would be a lose/lose for SE. Either they have to enforce the RP rules and that would require plenty of extra GM's only for that purpose (=extra spending with little to no return on investment) or alternatively they won't enforce it and then the community has one more reason to get upset.
That is completely untrue and I have no clue where you got that. SE wouldn't kick you for not being a roleplayer, nor would the Balmung community. Nothing or yours would even be touched, but you and your friends are plenty aware that Balmung is THE roleplay server for FFXIV. It's not a call to leave, but rather for the gaming community of FFXIV as a whole to recognise and allow people like us to get our name out better whilst being protected from disruptive individuals.I'm not a role-player and have been on Balmung since 1.0's beta, when it was actually Besaid (and Fabul). I have a radical idea.
create 3 new servers in there own data center and label the whole data center for RP
with all the cross world functions we are going to be getting this would be quite a solution. cross world events?
with a whole data center of your own, mega servers like Balmung will be unlikely to happen again.
i'm sorry to say this but for the sake of server limits Balmung has to be fragmented and changing the server structure is not the answer to solve 1 persons issues. I mean when only 1 server falls over due to new minor content that I would consider an issue
Age of War
It's not such a bad idea, if not for the fact that most people will flock to Balmung anyways. Though, if people are having trouble with the main server, they could always transfer out to one of the other two for whatever reason suits them.
If Balmung gets an RP icon, then I want Gilgamesh to have a RAID icon.
That's called just having a normal server that does PvE.

Honestly if you want the pop to drop on balmung or even balence out the best option would be to make a new server all together and label that one the rp server or even two servers
