Can't disagree that I hate when stories are around a secondary character rather the one you're in control: just feels detached and it's even one of the reasons why i don't even follow it.
I mean sure it can work sometimes, but this is no Sherlock Holmes!

I feel the opposite. There are too many stories where the main character is conveniently the savior in the plot. I like that supporting characters count in this game too. This isn't just about the Warriors of Light, this is the world.
I understand that it might be annoying if you at the same time dont even like that character but the problem is that our character cant talk. Without a character like Alphinaud that is in a way our voice we would just stand there completely silent. In single player games with a silent protagonist you can kinda forge your own way through different kind of choices and talk options. But in FF14 there are no different ways (other than flavor text that changes nothing) to react and SE does not want to put too much reaction onto our characters since not everyone sees him/her like that. So they have someone else react and talk for us.
If we dont want this we would have to accept that the WoL would turn into SEs character with answers and emotion that might not be how we would have reacted. Sometimes this already happened and I hope that they will keep some of the emotions and reactions for further stories since it felt more like my character was alive and not some puppet that nods along. But there is a really fine line between it being fine or overdoing it and thus taking away the aspect of the WoL being our character.
