I think the issue would be why they added it, not if they did. I hope we keep a free world, so if you want it to be all one group of people and the market keeps that afloat that's great! But sometimes I seriously question the whys.
Sometimes people's reasons for adding stuff makes my head whirl. It's not equal if you can't shift the situation around and it changes from being okay to not being okay. I'm not even suggesting people have to make "equal" content, like if you're making some hot stuff that needs tissues later for your gay target audience then you really don't want my opinion on what is hot... things don't need to be equal, but when you use "equality" as why you're doing something it better be equal then lol.
The other popular reason being "equal representation" is iffy and I'd rather they get off their pat self on the back box and just make the story they want because they wanted it (which is a fine reason~). The sort of "represent x group" is super slippery. For example we have no end of people with issues and you could easily break people down into smaller and smaller groups and demand each and everyone one of them be represented to the point that all casts and parts of stories have been decided for the next good while, you've lost almost all control of your work - even the people who wanted to represent a specific minority can't now unless they want to be hypocritical of what their goal was. It follows as well that it is more difficult to act as a whole unit when everyone is rushing to find their own special space to call their own, with constantly fracturing and exclusionary rules (sometimes you have no choice, but one should be careful to rush down the path of fracking for identity- labels shouldn't be what makes you, you). Also there tends to be a strong bias on how things are broken down and there is a very obvious abuse of what people want to see in the world rather than what is when they do this ("these are the issues I want you to talk about, and everything else is non-issue/not as important").
As for FFXIV I would be okay if they added reasonable elements here and there, but I would like it to be in a "this is not special" way. Unless I missed something and sexual preference is an issue in FFXIV I would ask that it is treated as if it isn't important, because when saving the world I don't really care if your preference is an innie or an outtie or which one you think you have. Also would add a lot of the romance in FFXIV seems to be heavily inferred rather than being strictly overt, and this means that sometimes the romance could easily just be friendships instead (and any same sex romance would make sense to also then be like this, inferred sort of way). Would greatly prefer any element they touch upon is not a political jab in the eye though and is more on a peaceful grouping of people.. not a militant attitude, I do not like the militant "my way or instead of the highway I'm going to try and run you off, run you over, and then find your family and do it to them too" - which is a rather terrifying sort of personality lol.
Because I feel it is apt for what I've seen happen to people over issues like this (even though its cheesy to quote):
He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster.
And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.
